Scattering from Model Nonspherical Particles (Physics of Earth and Space Environments)
The scattering of electromagnetic radiation by nonspherical particles has become an increasingly important research topic over the past 20 years. Instead of handling anisotropic particles of arbitrary shape, the authors consider the more amenable problem of aggregates of spherical particles. This is often a very satisfactory approach as the optical response of nonspherical particles depends more on their general symmetry and the quantity of refractive material than on the precise details of their shape. The book addresses a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from scattering properties of water droplets containing pollutants, atmospheric aerosols and ice crystals to the modeling of cosmic dust grains as aggregates. In this extended second edition the authors have encompassed all the new topics arising from their recent studies of cosmic dust grains. Thus many chapters were deeply revised and new chapters were added. The new material spans - The description of the state of polarization of electromagnetic waves of general form
- The conservation theorems of combined systems of fields and particles
- The appropriate multipole expansion for waves of general wave vector and of general state of polarization
- A number of new applications
- The effects of radiation pressure and radiation torque on cosmic dust grains
A study of the morphology of cosmic dust grains and of the distribution and polarization of the electromagnetic field in the interior of aggregated dust grains .

Aerosol Sampling: Science, Standards, Instrumentation and Applications
This book provides a comprehensive account of the important field of aerosol sampling as it is applied to the measurement of aerosols that are ubiquitous in occupational and living environments, both indoor and outdoor. It is written in four parts: Part A contains 9 chapters that describe the current knowledge of the physical science that underpins the process of aerosol sampling. Part B contains 4 chapters, which present the basis of standards for aerosols, including the link with human exposure by inhalation. Part C contains 7 chapters that cover the development of practical aerosol sampling instrumentation, and how technical designs and methods have evolved over the years in order that aerosol sampling may be carried out in a manner matching the health-related and other criteria that have been proposed as parts of standards. Finally Part D contains 6 chapters that describe how a wide range of aerosol sampling instruments have performed when they have been applied in the field in both occupational and ambient atmospheric environments, including how different instruments, nominally intended to measure the same aerosol fraction, compare when used side-by-side in the real world. The book draws together all that is known about aerosol sampling, for the benefit of researchers and practitioners in occupational and environmental health and all other fields of science and engineering where aerosols are of interest..

Aerosol Pollution Impact on Precipitation: A Scientific Review
Life on Earth is critically dependent upon the continuous cycling of water between oceans, continents and the atmosphere Precipitation (including rain, snow, and hail) is the primary mechanism for transporting water from the atmosphere back to the Earth’s surface. It is also the key physical process that links aspects of climate, weather, and the global hydrological cycle. Changes in precipitation regimes and the frequency of extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, severe ice/snow storms, monsoon fluctuations and hurricanes are of great potential importance to life on the planet. One of the factors that could contribute to precipitation modification is aerosol pollution from various sources such as urban air pollution and biomass burning. Natural and anthropogenic changes in atmospheric aerosols might have important implications for precipitation by influencing the hydrological cycle, which in turn could feed back to climate changes. From an Earth Science perspective, a key question is how changes expected in climate will translate into changes in the hydrological cycle, and what trends may be expected in the future. We require a much better understanding and hence predictive capability of the moisture and energy storages and exchanges among the Earth’s atmosphere, oceans, continents and biological systems. This book is a review of our knowledge of the relationship between aerosols and precipitation reaching the Earth's surface and it includes a list of recommendations that could help to advance our knowledge in this area. .

Satellite Aerosol Remote Sensing Over Land (Springer Praxis Books / Environmental Sciences)
The book discusses the current status of the retrieval of aerosol properties from satellite radiometer measurements of the spectral top-of-atmosphere reflectances. The results described in the book are summarized in Chapter 1 (Introduction). Chapters 2 and 3 describe the aerosol retrievals based on NASA MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. In particular, Chapter 2 is concerned with the description of the dark-land official MODIS Collection 5 aerosol retrieval algorithm. Chapter 3 uses the time series technique to improve MODIS aerosol retrievals over land. The main subject of Chapter 4 is the introduction of the iterative algorithm to get the aerosol optical thickness (AOD) and surface reflectance from ESA MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) data. The algorithm is based on the iterative solution of the radiative transfer equation. Chapters 5, 6, and 7 describe different AOD retrieval algorithm approaches using the (Advanced) Along Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR-2 and AATSR) data. In Chapter 8 an aerosol retrieval algorithm based on the synergy of AATSR and Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric CHartographY (SCIAMACHY) data is introduced. The retrievals of AOD from the Multiangle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument on board the NASA TERRA satellite are described in Chapter 9. Polarimetric remote sensing of aerosol properties using airborne and satellite measurements is the subject of Chapter 10. The results described in Chapters 2 - 10 are obtained using polar satellites. Chapter 11 addresses observations from a geostationary orbit using as an example the data from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager on the Meteosat Second Generation. The final Chapter is aimed at the synthesis of all available AOD products to better understand the global spatial distribution of terrestrial aerosols including sea salt, desert dust, smoke, etc. .
