X-Ray Diffraction: In Crystals, Imperfect Crystals, and Amorphous Bodies
Superb study begins with fundamentals of x-ray diffraction theory using Fourier transforms, then applies general results to various atomic structures, amorphous bodies, crystals and imperfect crystals. Elementary laws of x-ray diffraction on crystals follow as special case. Highly useful for solid-state physicists, metallographers, chemists, and biologists. 154 illustrations. 1963 edition.

Hydrogenated Amorphous Silicon (Cambridge Solid State Science Series)
Divided roughly into two parts, the book describes the physical properties and device applications of hydrogenated amorphous silicon The first section is concerned with the atomic and electronic structure, and covers growth defects and doping and defect reactions. The emphasis is on the optical and electronic properties that result from the disordered structure. The second part of the book describes electronic conduction, recombination, interfaces, and multilayers. The special attribute of a-Si:H which makes it useful is the ability to deposit the material inexpensively over large areas, while retaining good semiconducting properties, and the final chapter discusses various applications and devices..

Optical Nonlinearities in Chalcogenide Glasses and their Applications (Springer Series in Optical Sciences) (Springer Series in Optical Sciences)

Photonics, which uses photons for information and image processing, has been labeled the technology of the 21st century, for which non-linear optical processes provide the key functions of frequency conversion and optical switching. Chalcogenide glass fiber is one of the most promising candidates for use as a non-linear optical medium because of its high optical nonlinearity and long interaction length. Since the chalcogenide glass fibers transmit into the IR, there are numerous potential applications in the civil, medical and military areas. One of the most exciting developments in the future is going to be in the area of rare-earth ion doping of chalcogenide fibers for IR fluorescence emission. The IR light sources, lasers and amplifiers developed using this phenomena will be very useful in civil, medical and military applications. Remote IR spectroscopy and imaging using flexible fibers will be realized for applications. Other future research areas which will inevitably be explored includes non-linear optical properties of these IR glasses. High-speed optical communication requires ultra-fast all-optical processing and switching capabilities. The Kerr non-linearity, an ultrafast optical non-linearity, is often used as the basic switching mechanism. A practical, small device that can be switched ~ 1 pJ energies requires a large Kerr effect with minimal losses (both linear and non-linear). Chalcogenides have a Kerr non-linearity hundred of times larger that silica, making them excellent and unique for ultrafast all-optical devices. Results of non-linearity of chalcogenide glasses indicate the great potential of some of these glasses for all-optical switching and all-optical processing devices.

Introduction to Amorphous Magnets
This is an introductory textbook on amorphous magnets for students and scientists in physics and materials science. Basic physical arguments are given and experimental data are systematically collected and discussed. The book deals mostly with the qualitative and semiquantitative aspects of materials that can be deducted, in a relatively simple way, from the fundamental equations of solid state physics..

Stan Ovshinsky and the Hydrogen Economy: Creating a Better World
Almost five decades ago, Stan and Iris Ovshinsky proposed a radical idea, the hydrogen loop, to fully utilize the benefits of hydrogen, the universes ultimate energy source. What started as this couples inspiring commitment to make the world a better place is now realized in the products and technologies offered by the company they founded Energy Conversion Devices. Stan Ovshinsky is likely to be known as the Father of the Hydrogen Economy. This is his story. The implementation of this totally clean and renewable system (the hydrogen economy) now falls to us. Will you make your roof a photovoltaic one? Have you bought a hybrid electric automobile? Will you be an early adopter of hydrogen burning internal combustion cars or fuel cell powered ones? Will you now invest in alternative energy stocks? Will you vote for politicians who promote incentives for the adoption of alternative energy technologies? Will you use hydrogen now? Hydrogen can replace anything that burns and can give us a cleaner, safer world. Remember, if you are not part of the solution then you are the problem..

The Glass Transition
This is the first book dedicated to the glass transition since this concept became recognized as a distinct and independent field of investigation. The glass transition is a synonym for relaxation and dynamics in complex disordered systems, especially in liquids. It embraces time-scales ranging from picoseconds to years. The book describes and interrelates the following processes: cooperative alpha processes in a cold liquid, structural relaxation in the glass near Tg, the Johari-Goldstein beta process, the Williams-Götze process in a warm liquid, fast nonactivated cage rattling and boson peak, and ultraslow Fischer modes. By describing the salient facts, explaining and discussing the fundamentals, the author attempts to introduce a unifying concept for the entire material. The formulas, diagrams and references are carefully selected to illustrate the main current ideas about the glass transition..
