Don't Get Too Comfortable: The Indignities of Coach Class, The Torments of Low Thread Count, The Never- Ending Quest for Artisanal Olive Oil, and Other First World Problems
David Rakoff takes us on a bitingly funny grand tour of our culture of excess. Whether he is contrasting the elegance of one of the last flights of the supersonic Concorde with the good-times-and-chicken-wings populism of Hooters Air; working as a cabana boy at a South Beach hotel; or traveling to a private island off the coast of Belize to watch a soft-core video shoot—where he is provided with his very own personal manservant—rarely have greed, vanity, selfishness, and vapidity been so mercilessly skewered. Somewhere along the line, our healthy self-regard has exploded into obliterating narcissism; our manic getting and spending have now become celebrated as moral virtues. Simultaneously a Wildean satire and a plea for a little human decency, Don’t Get Too Comfortable shows that far from being bobos in paradise, we’re in a special circle of gilded-age hell. .

American Artisanal: Finding the Country's Best Real Food, from Cheese to Chocolate
We have a growing hunger to know where our food comes from. In our increasingly corporate world, we are looking to get back in touch with our roots to the land. American Artisanal feeds this hunger as no book has before. The book celebrates eighteen of America’s leading food artisans–from Wood Prairie Farms potatoes in Maine to L. L. Lanier Honey in Florida, from Reed’s Ginger Brew in California to Earthy Delights mushrooms in Michigan. These are folks who are returning to the basics of sustainable, small-scale, or just plain high quality production. Food is a second career for many of these producers, who decided to drop out of the office rat race and pursue their real passion, literally in the field. In their inspirational stories we also can see the emergence of a true national cuisine. Also, woven throughout each chapter is the engaging history behind our foods–their natural origins and long journeys to cultivation. Recipes and ordering information are provided so you can enjoy these culinary delights at home..

The Socio-Economic Impacts of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining in Developing Countries
The purpose of this book is to examine both the positive and negative socio economic impacts of artisanal and small-scale mining in developing countries. In recent years, a number of governments have attempted to formalize this rudimentary sector of industry, having come to grips with its socioeconomic importance. However, the industry continues to be plagued with a wide range of problems, including environmental and health-related impacts, rampant illegal activity and illicit mineral marketing, and disease. The book provides an up-to-date overview of the social and economic conditions in the artisanal and small-scale mining industry, integrating both theoretical assessments with case study research recently undertaken in the field. Geared toward servicing a wide-ranging audience, including academics, consultants, and government researchers, The Socioeconomic Impacts of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining in Developing Countries is an invaluable tool for policy-makers at all levels..

Seaweed Farming and Artisanal Fisheries in an Indonesian Seagrass Bed
In Indonesia, coastal villages traditionally strongly depend on fisheries. With increasing population density and fishing pressure, alternative sources of income become more important. One economic activity is seaweed farming, which has been introduced in Indonesia since the 1980s. Algae farming is mostly restricted to shallow coastal waters and their natural ecosystems, e. g. seagrass beds. They themselves are habitats for many species which are the basis for traditional fisheries. Therefore, if seaweed farming causes the seagrass ecosystem to change, its economical benefits might be outbalanced by losses in the fisheries sector. The research for this thesis included investigations of seaweed farming and its economic importance and influence on seagrass flora, the economic importance of artisanal fisheries` practices and implications for management, and the variation of fish stock and gill net fishery in a seagrass bed in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This book provides insight in the dynamics of a socio-ecological system and gives guidelines for development agencies and decision makers for the implementation of seaweed farming as an source of alternative income in the Indo-Pacific..
