Shabby Chic
Valuable flea market finds... A peeling, antique vanity in muted sea green... An elegant, cracked chandelier... An enormous, slipcovered sofa with deep, cushions .. Comfort, the beauty of imperfections, the allure of time-worn objects, and the appeal of simple practical living: these are the cornerstones of what has come to be known as the Shabby Chic style. Like the cosy familiarity of a well-worn pair of faded jeans, the dilapidated elegance of an Italian villa, or the worn grandeur of faded velvets and mismatched floral china handed down from your grandmother's attic, the Shabby Chic style is a revived appreciation for what is used, well-loved, and worn. It is a respect for natural evolution and a regard for what is easy and sensible. The hundreds of lavish photographs in this book invite you inside the unique world of Shabby Chic. Rachel Ashwell, founder of the Shabby Chic home decor stores, for the first time provides her invaluable and much-sought-after advice on how to re-create Shabby Chic style in your own home. With engaging text and easy-to- follow instructions, Rachel details the Shabby Chic basics in a way that will put even the most apprehensive or novice decorators at ease. From flowers to fabrics to lighting, Rachel illuminates all of the elements essential to this unpretentious yet truly exquisite style. A behind-the-scenes look at a flea market lets readers in on Rachel's personal secrets of how to cull hidden treasures from flea market trash--an old trunk, its paint peeling around the edges, can be given new life as a coffee table, while a chipped white iron salvage piece becomes the perfect frame for a vintage mirror. This book tells you not only how to restore these pieces but how to find the perfect place for them in your home. Gorgeous colour photographs and accompanying text reveal how this relaxed look works with a variety of different styles, from Victorian to Mediterranean to contemporary. .

Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic Treasure Hunting and Decorating Guide
By now most readers even marginally interested in home decorating are familiar with the democratic principles of decorating elaborated in Rachel Ashwell's first book, Shabby Chic: namely, that well-made vintage furniture and home accessories can add a cozy grandeur to your home, even if the paint's a little thin or the fabric a bit faded. In her second book, Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic Treasure Hunting & Decorating Guide, Ashwell shares her processes, from a stall-by-stall description of a flea market trip to pictures of her design boards scattered with photos, fabric swatches, and paint chips. Ashwell doesn't skimp on details: she tells how to decide on a fair bargaining price at flea markets, how to clean old items without harming them, and (step by step) how one ugly glass-fronted cabinet topped with old linoleum and mismatched shelf paper became an attractive, roomy storage piece that houses her daughter's books, dolls, and bedding. This is a friendly, intimate book in which Ashwell shares pictures of her own home and those of her friends--some of whom live in roomy beach houses and some of whom live in 450-square-foot cottages, and all of whom use the main Shabby Chic concepts of comfort, function, and beauty in deciding which objects to share their space with. Fans of the original Shabby Chic will find this follow-up every bit as useful, attractive, and accessible..

Skull Session
Guitarist Daniel Hecht sold a lot of albums in the 1970s and '80s: his Willow on the Windham Hill label might be sitting in your closet. But in 1989 a hand ailment turned Hecht's talents to writing, and the first published result is as dazzling and moving as his music. In this novel, gifted Vermont woodworker Paul Skoglund has learned to live with and basically control his Tourette's syndrome, thanks to early training from his caring father and daily doses of haloperidol. But the drug has also burned away the once-sharp edge of his creativity, and Paul has been having a hard time earning a living. So when his eccentric Aunt Vivien offers him a job restoring her old house in Lewisboro, New York, Skoglund is glad to accept--even though it will take him away from his 8-year-old son, Mark, who suffers from neurological troubles of his own. It turns out that the house has been savaged by vandals who are apparently linked to several local teenagers who have disappeared in recent months. While state police investigator Morgan Ford pursues the mystery in an official way, Paul and his fearless lover Lia discover that the damage to the house is of unnatural--possibly even demonic--origins. Hecht balances these diverse elements with impressive artistry, all the while making us care for the fate of his characters..

Chemoarchitectonic Atlas of the Rat Brain, Second Edition
Now in its 6th edition, the Paxinos and Watson The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates has been the most used reference of neuroscientists for the past twentyfive years. Both the illustrations and nomenclature of the atlas have become standard tools used by almost all research neuroscientists who deal with anatomy, physiology, or function. In 1999, the same authors published volumes Chemoarchitectonic Atlas of the Rat Forebrain and Chemoarchitectonic Atlas of the Rat Brainstem. These publications have been recognized as providing an archive of chemical markers in the rat brain guiding researchers in the identification of structures in their own preparations in many areas of research. They provided primary data which researchers could apply to their own studies. These books were based on the 4th edition of the Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, and are now out of print. This second edition of the material in these books will combine the two volumes of the first edition into a single volume. The photographs are presented one to a page in the forebrain and midbrain areas, two to a page in the hindbrain. Different chemoarchitectonic stains are displayed with labels identifying the structures of the brain, following the delineations and nomenclature of the Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates, Sixth Edition. * New edition of the chemoarchitectonic atlas to accompany the gold standard reference on the neuroanatomy of the nervous system of the most important model animal in Neuroscience and experimental psychology * Chemoarchitectonic atlases have been providing an archive of chemical markers in the rat brain used in many areas of research. They provided primary data which helps researchers identify structures in their own preparations from neuroanatomical, physiological, neuropharmacological, and gene expression studies. * Combines the two books from the first edition on the rat forebrain and the rat brainstem into one * Thoroughly revised identification of structures following the new data from The Rat Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates 6th edition and the Chick Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates.
