The Shipwreck That Saved Jamestown: The Sea Venture Castaways and the Fate of America (John MacRae Books)

A freshly researched account of the dramatic rescue of the Jamestown

settlers

The English had long dreamed of colonizing America, especially after Sir Francis Drake brought home Spanish treasure and dramatic tales from his raids in the Caribbean. Ambitions of finding gold and planting a New World colony seemed within reach when in 1606 Thomas Smythe extended overseas trade with the launch of the Virginia Company. But from the beginning the American enterprise was a disaster. Within two years warfare with Indians and dissent among the settlers threatened to destroy Smythe’s Jamestown just as it had Raleigh’s Roanoke a generation earlier.

To rescue the doomed colonists and restore order, the company chose a new leader, Thomas Gates. Nine ships left Plymouth in the summer of 1609—the largest fleet England had ever assembled—and sailed into the teeth of a storm so violent that “it beat all light from Heaven.” The inspiration for Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the hurricane separated the flagship from the fleet, driving it onto reefs off the coast of Bermuda—a lucky shipwreck (all hands survived) which proved the turning point in the colony’s fortune.

DK Readers: Bermuda Triangle (Level 3: Reading Alone)
In the area between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico lies the most mysterious expanse of water in the world: the Bermuda Triangle. Over the last 50 years, 1,500 people have disappeared here without a trace, and many more have experienced bizarre and inexplicable incidents. Throughout history, ships, planes, sailboats, and flying boats have encountered thick yellow fogs out of blue sky, compasses and other navigational instruments going haywire for no apparent reason, and peculiar unidentified underwater crafts. In Andrew Donkin's eye-opening book, readers will find a section on possible natural explanations for the mystery, and another on "out of this world" theories about what's going down in the Bermuda Triangle.

Dorling Kindersley's Level 3 books are designed for children who are reading alone now, and seeking compelling subject matter in a vibrant, easy-to-absorb format. This series uses more complex sentence structures than in the previous levels, and includes information boxes and pronunciation guides to expand young readers' horizons. Doring Kindersley is known for its visual style, using dramatic photographs and illustrations and engaging text to motivate younger children to "learn to read--then read to learn!" (Ages 7 to 10) --Emilie Coulter.

And then Zack falls in with wise and wily Teddy Schwartz. A legendary Bermudan treasure salvager, Schwartz may be Zack’s last hope for finding his long-lost loot—but at what cost? Time is running out on this bizarre, bloody, and tumultuous two-thousand-year-old quest…

The Fog: A Never Before Published Theory of the Bermuda Triangle Phenomenon
Is there an explanation for the thousands of people who have disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle? What can we learn from Charles Lindbergh, Christopher Columbus, and Bruce Gernon-the co-author of this book-who have survived their frightening encounters in this region?

The Fog presents Gernon's exciting new theory of the Bermuda Triangle, based upon his firsthand experiences, reports of other survivors, and scientific research. Gernon and MacGregor intelligently discuss how a meteorological phenomenon, electronic fog, may explain the bizarre occurrences in this region: equipment malfunctions, disorientation among pilots, and time distortions. They also explore the fascinating history of this infamous region and its potential link to Atlantis, UFO sightings, and a secret navy base on Andros Island.

Rob MacGregor has written several books on New Age topics and has won the Edgar Allan Poe award in mystery writing. Both Gernon and MacGregor live in South Florida, on the edge of the Bermuda Triangle. Bruce Gernon is a pilot who has flown extensively in the Caribbean. He has appeared in many documentaries about the Bermuda Triangle.
