Disco Bloodbath: A Fabulous But True Tale of Murder in Clubland
In 1996, New York City drug dealer and "club kid" Angel Melendez was bludgeoned, injected with Drano, dismembered, and tossed into the river. James St. James was there when the killer confessed, but before that, there were the clubs, the parties, the drugs, and the many fabulous (and some not so fabulous) outfits Disco Bloodbath is "celebutante" St. James's story, equal parts confession and attempt at closure. This is no square-jawed detective's account of the investigation of the crime; St. James is a drug-addled clubster who wears a wedding dress out on the town and invokes Judy Garland as he talks about the scene in which he and Melendez immersed themselves before the murder. His story, despite its gruesome subject matter and frequent, shocking lucidity, has a chatty and anecdotal quality that's compelling, endearing, and unrelentingly human. --Lisa Higgins.

St. Valentine's Day Massacre: The Untold Story of the Gangland Bloodbath That Brought Down Al Capone
During Prohibition, Chicago's Beer Wars turned the city into a battleground, secured its reputation as the gangster capital of the world, and laid the foundation for organized crime nationwide Bootlegger bloodshed was greater there than anywhere else.
The machine-gun murders of seven men on the morning of February 14, 1929, by killers dressed as cops became the gangland "crime of the century." Or so the story went. Since then it has been featured in countless histories, biographies, movies, and television specials. The St. Valentine's Day Massacre, however, is the first book-length treatment of the subject, and it challenges the commonly held assumption that Al Capone ordered the slayings to gain supremacy in the Chicago underworld. Instead, authors William J. Helmer and Arthur J. Bilek assert the deed was a case of bad timing and poor judgment by a secret crew from St. Louis known to Capone's mostly Italian mob as the "American boys."
The target of the murder squad was indeed Bugs Moran, but the American boys, who were dressed as policemen and arrived in two bogus police cars, arrived at the garage where the massacre took place before Moran arrived. They didn't know who Moran was or what he looked like, and since none of Moran's crew would admit to being him, the counterfeit cops stupidly killed everyone, just to be sure they got him. Much of the evidence that pointed to the American boys was deftly and intentionally ignored by law-enforcement officials in Chicago. The story surfaced again briefly in 1935 with a manuscript written by the widow of one of the gunmen and with public knowledge of a lookout's long-suppressed confession. In the end, the machine-gun bullets heard 'round the world marked the beginning of the end for Al Capone..

God, Darwin and this Age of Darkness: How the elimination of God by philosophy and science led to the nightmare of the twentieth century
The Enlightenment is the basis of modern consciousness in the West: its theoretical tenets have become our assumptions But what if those tenets are false? What if, rather than an Age of Reason, the 'Enlightenment' ushered in an Age of Darkness - an age of intolerance, mechanised warfare and horrific slaughter - an age we are still living through? Dave Holt shows how the assumptions of that age led directly to the rift between science and religion - via Darwin's Origin of Species, 'survival of the fittest' and the philosophical 'death of God' - and that the scientific method itself is inadequate to answer the ultimate questions that are too vast in time, dimension and complexity. By incorporating information and theories of the past sixty years that include the verification of ancient texts such as the Old Testament and Greek legends, he concludes that there are real tangible reasons for the existence of religion and man's character flaws, fragile mental health, susceptibility to chronic disease and obsession with conquest and war. With this insight into the real history and complex make-up of man, solutions may be possible. Wide-ranging in its research and thorough in its indictment of established theories, Holt is ultimately convincing in his argument for the importance of humankind's spiritual experience and an intelligent force behind the design of the universe..
