Frank Films: The Film and Video Work of Robert Frank
At the end of the 1950s, photographer Robert Frank decided that he was done with photography and became a filmmaker Not until the 1970s would he begin to take the occasional still again. To date, Frank has created more than 25 films and videos, some of them classics of the New American Cinema of the 1950s and 1960s. In his films, Frank amalgamated documentary, fiction, and autobiography, cutting across genres, defying each and every law of Hollywood in his relentless search for truth. In a time where the crass commercialism of mainstream film's visual grammar seems to reign supreme, Frank's film and video work appears to be his most radical and visionary legacy.~Frank films fills a long overdue gap by providing a comprehensive overview of Frank's films. The book's main essay discusses the history and the aesthetics of Frank's film work, while shorter texts by various authors examine every film and video by Frank in detail. This book offers a visually unique approach to Frank's films: at his request, only new stills taken from video tapes were used. The numerous video images add up to a visual essay on Frank's cinema that enters in an engaging dialogue with his photographic work, in particular with the stills he has created since the 70s. The texts and images in Frank Films offer an innovative and in-depth approach to the oeuvre of one of the greatest and most restless artists of the 20th century, proving required reading for everyone interested in Robert Frank and the history of American avant garde film. Created in collaboration with Graz Zweitausenddrei, diagonale, Pro Helvetia, Sixpackfilm. A decision: I put my Leica in a cupboard. Enough of lying in wait, pursuing, sometimes catching the essence of the black and the white, the knowledge of where God is. I make films. Now I speak to the people in my viewfinder. Not simple and not especially successful. --Robert Frank.

Getting Around Montreal

• Most streets bear names, not numbers, and signs use French terminology ("rue" for "street," usually dropped when giving an address, and "est" or "ouest" for east or west of Boulevard St-Laurent). On streets running roughly northward, buildings are numbered starting from the St. Lawrence River. Some street names have widely used informal English equivalents (Rue de la Montagne/Mountain Street).

• Montreal is a compact city, with a central area only about 2km/1.24mi square and few challenging slopes. Walking is pleasant during most of the year. In winter, icy sidewalks can be a hazard, and appropriate clothing is a must. Underground passageways (see Landmarks/Underground City) offer sheltered routes when it’s cold or rainy outside.

LANGUAGES

French is the majority language in Montreal and the province of Quebec, and businesses are generally required to use French in their operations and on signs. English is widely understood, especially downtown. You can usually find assistance in English, either in person or when calling.

A few words in Canadian French will come in handy:

yes – oui
no – non
please – s’il vous plait
thank you – merci
you’re welcome – bienvenue
hello, good morning – bonjour
goodbye – bye
how much? – combien?
where? – où?
I don’t understand – Je ne comprends pas
Do you speak English? – Parlez-vous anglais?
breakfast – déjeuner
lunch – dîner
dinner – souper
expressway – autoroute
gasoline – essence
collect call – appel à frais virés
subway – Métro.

Famous German Novellas of the 19th Century (Immensee. Peter Schlemihl. Brigitta)
Theodor Storm: Immensee / Adelbert von Chamisso: Peter Schlemihl / Adalbert Stifter: Brigitta ---Theodor Storm (1817 - 88), poet and short-story writer, was born in Schleswig... As early as 1843 he had made himself known as a lyrical poet of the Romantic School, ...but he wrote nothing that excels, in depth and tenderness of feeling, the charming story of Immensee; and taking his work all in all, Storm still ranks today as a master of the short story in Ger-man literature, rich though it is in this form of prose-fiction. (C. W. Bell) --- Peter Schlemihl, one of the pleasantest fancies of the days when Germany delighted in romance, was first published in 1814. The story is a poet's whim. Later writings of Chamisso (1781-1838) proved him to be one of the best lyric poets of the romance school of his time, entirely German in his tone of thought. (Henry Morley) --- Brigitta is usually regarded as an early example of German realism and written by probably the most accomplished Austrian prose writer of the nineteenth century, Adalbert Stifter (1805 - 68)..., an illustration of Stifter's didactic con-cern with inner beauty in contrast to outward appearances... Stifter instructs us in more than inner beauty by demonstrating for us - perhaps unwittingly - that the preferred and positive values of the civilized world are always already informed by their antinomies. (Robert C. Holub in: Brigitta, or the Lesson of Realism).

The World through Our Eyes: A Collaboration of Essays by International Students
Since the end of the Cold War the world has become a different and increasingly volatile place, where our lives are ever more intertwined with the lives of others around the globe; a world of rising terrorism, of clashing cultures and religions, of expanding multi-national corporations, of economic volatility, environmental damage and much, much more.

These changes have brought rise to problems that we can no longer push aside. A new generation of international students, brought together by arguably the top two international student conferences in the world, the ISC-Symposium and the World Business Dialogue, seek to spark discourse and action, to confront and address these problems.

In The World through Our Eyes, students voice their concerns and pose potential solutions. A ‘world’s eye view’ from an insider’s perspective, these unique viewpoints range from an essay on Swiss banking by a Swiss banker, to a history of women in India by an Indian woman, to poverty in Kenya by a Kenyan national.
