The Waterloo Wonders
Seventy-five years ago, the Waterloo Wonders came frolicking out of the Lawrence County hills to become the most colorful, most exciting, most unforgettable team in the history of Ohio high school basketball Over two seasons, they won back-to-back state championships and in the process, perhaps as many as 100 games, only a handful of them on their own court. In an era when a virtually unknown team called the Harlem Globetrotters was still playing one-night stands in small-town high school gyms and dance halls across the Middle West, the Wonders, imitating no one, astonished overflow crowds in the state's largest arenas with their whirlwind passing, deadeye shooting, lockdown defense and whimsical showmanship. Left-handed, right-handed, two-handed, behind the back, between the legs, over-handed, underhanded, bowling style, sitting down, lying down, without looking-the Wonders passed with such lightning speed, such radar accuracy, fans and opponents alike often did not know where the ball was. Now, on the 75h anniversary of their first championship season, author Dick Burdette, whose book, The Fabulous Waterloo Wonders was published in 1961, has written a revised and expanded account of their story, It is now available exclusively at authorhouse.com or at waterloowonders.com. From Legalism to Freedom
In 1517, Martin Luther took a stand for justification by faith alone in the finished work of Christ upon Calvary. As a result of his position, he suffered persecution for adhering to the Scriptures alone and not to traditions. This book traces my spiritual journey from legalism to freedom in Christ. In sixteen chapters, I map out my heritage within the Churches of Christ and the motivations that eventually led me out of bondage to liberty. One of the lengthiest chapters in this book is "Where the Scriptures Speak." One objective of this chapter is to help individuals to understand that one may speak where the Bible speaks and not necessarily speak as the Bible speaks. Chapters 11, 12, and 13 represent the very heart of my escape from authoritarianism to my dependence upon God's righteousness, a righteousness from God through faith in Jesus. Chapter 14 focuses on preaching in the early church. Without an understanding of the Gospel that the apostles proclaimed, Christians will never learn the spirit of toleration for differences within the Christian community. Chapters 8, 15, and 16 give attention to the Last Supper. The communion should be a constant reminder of the Cross and true unity among God's children. Chapter 1, 2, and 3 outline my original journey of faith. Dallas Burdette has been a serious student, teacher and preacher of the Bible for fifty-eight years, supporting himself for many years as an agent for AFLAC. He has written numerous articles for religious journals, as well as many essays and sermons which are available on his website. He has developed a keen interest in promoting unity among God's people through a more accurate reading of the Word. He has degrees from Amridge University (formerly Southern Christian University) where he also was Director of Extended Learning for five years. He holds the Doctor of Ministry degree (1999) from Erskine Theological Seminary..

The Drums of 47th (Prairie State Books)
'This eloquent memoir records the Civil War experiences of Robert J. Burdette, private in the 47th Illinois Infantry Regiment. From Peoria to Corinth, from Corinth to Vicksburg, up the Red River country, down to Mobile and Fort Blakely, and back to Tupelo and Selma, the 47th marched three thousand miles during Burdette's tour, from March 1862 to December 1864. In a literate voice rare in war memoirs, Burdette speaks of comradeship built and tested, the noise and confusion of the battlefield, the conflicting feelings of witnessing a military execution'.'Both nostalgic and piercingly immediate, his remembrances evoke the sights, sounds, smells, and above all the inner feelings stirred up by war, from exuberance to terror and from patriotic fervor to compassion for a fallen enemy. Originally published - on the eve of another great conflict - in 1914, "The Drums of the 47th" is a moving depiction of the inner life of the common soldier. Like Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage", Burdette's book puts a human face on the war and his words speak to all who have served or imagined serving under fire. The introduction by John E. Hallwas provides a biographical sketch of Burdette and a commentary on his engaging Civil War memoir'..
