The Prayer Book of Charles the Bold: A Study of a Flemish Masterpiece from the Burgundian Court (Getty Distribution)
In January of 1469, the accounts of Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy record a payment to the scribe Nicolas Spierinc for having written "some prayers for my lord." Seven months later, the same account notes a payment to the illuminator Lievin van Lathem for twenty-five miniatures plus borders and decorated initials in the same manuscript. In this seminal study, the late Antoine de Schryver presents an argument that the documents refer to the exquisite prayer book of Charles the Bold now in the J. Paul Getty Museum (Ms. 37)--one of Charles's most splendid commissions, belonging to the greatest era of Netherlandish Burgundian book painting. De Schryver's in-depth research opens a window onto the careers of the Van Lathem, who served three rulers of the Burgundian Netherlands over forty years, and Nicolas Spierinc, the most inventive and brilliant scribe of Charles's court. This volume reproduces all of the book's miniatures and some of its elegant calligraphic pages..

John the Fearless: The Growth of Burgundian Power (History of Valois Burgundy)
John the Fearless, second Duke of Burgundy, is one of the more dramatic and puzzling characters among medieval rulers. He inherited the newly created duchy from his father, and defended and developed its power ruthlessly during his ducal reign (1404-1419). In the process, he allied himself with the English party in France, with whom he was supposed to have made an 'infernal pact', and came to dominate French politics; his manoeuvres led directly to his assassination on the bridge of Montereau in the presence of Charles, dauphin of France, who may have been personally involved. Indeed, the main theme of the book is John the Fearless's activities in France, which are seen in the light of the continued need to exploit French resources for the benefit of Burgundy. John also continued to build on the administrative and financial structures created by his father, which were the mainstay of the ducal power, and he had to deal with the restlessness of the Flemish towns, only recently made part of the Burgundian state.More than any other Burgundian ruler, it is John's personality which determines the course of events: violent and unscrupulous, one quality which John the Fearless completely lacked was prudence. He was a masterful opportunist, who acted impulsively with speed and decision, on the spur of the moment. In the end it was one of his own favoured weapons, political assassination, which was turned against him..

The Promised Lands: The Low Countries Under Burgundian Rule, 1369-1530 (The Middle Ages Series)
They were, in the words of one contemporary observer, "the Promised Lands." In all of Europe, only Northern Italy could rival the economic power and cultural wealth of the Low Countries in the later Middle Ages.
In The Promised Lands, Wim Blockmans and Walter Prevenier trace the relations between the cultural and economic developments of the Low Countries and the political evolution of the region under the rule of the dukes of Burgundy. Combining political, diplomatic, administrative, economic, social, artistic, and cultural history, Blockmans and Prevenier have synthesized the most recent research on the subject--much of it their own--to produce the most accessible and authoritative book in English on the subject.
This is an updated and revised translation of a classic work first published in 1988, now expanded and reoriented toward a broader international readership. .

Pierre de la Rue and Musical Life at the Habsburg-Burgundian Court
For twenty-four or more years composer Pierre de la Rue (d. 1518) provided music for one of the leading musical institutions of his day, the grande chapelle of the Habsburg-Burgundian court. Serving successive rulers Maximilian I, Philip the Fair, Juana of Castile, Marguerite of Austria, and the future Charles V, La Rue surpassed a dozen composer colleagues in his creation of polyphony to meet the needs of the court and its extravagant liturgy. This study, the first ever in English, traces La Rue's life and career, explores aspects of his compositional output, and recounts the reawakening of modern scholarship to his unique contributions..
