An Ace of the Eighth: An American Fighter Pilot's Air War in Europe
FOR A FIGHTER PILOT IN THE MIGHTY EIGHTH, DEATH WAS ALWAYS A HEARTBEAT AWAY.
When the skies of Europe blazed with the fiercest air battles in history, fighter pilots like Norman “Bud” Fortier were in the thick of it, flying four hundred miles an hour at thirty thousand feet, dodging flak and dueling with Nazi aces. In their role as “escorts” to Flying Fortresses and Liberators, the fighter squadrons’ ability to blast enemy aircraft from the sky was key to the success of pinpoint bombing raids on German oil refineries, communication and supply lines, and other crucial targets. Flying in formation with the bomber stream, Fortier and the rest of his squadron helped develop dive-bombing and strafing tactics for the Thunderbolts and Mustangs. As the war progressed, fighter squadrons began to carry out their own bombing missions. From blasting V-1 missile sites along France’s “rocket coast” and the hell-torn action of D day to the critical attacks on the Ruhr Valley and massive daylight raids on German industrial targets, Fortier was part of the Allies’ bitter struggle to bring the Nazi war machine to a halt. In describing his own hundred-plus missions and by including the accounts of fellow fighter pilots, Fortier recaptures the excitement and fiery terror of the world’s most dangerous cat-and-mouse game..

Cultural Memory: Resistance, Faith, and Identity
Sangre llama a sangre. (Blood cries out to blood.) Latin American aphorism
The common "blood" of a peoplethat imperceptible flow that binds neighbor to neighbor and generation to generationderives much of its strength from cultural memory. Cultural memories are those transformative historical experiences that define a culture, even as time passes and it adapts to new influences. For oppressed peoples, cultural memory engenders the spirit of resistance; not surprisingly, some of its most powerful incarnations are rooted in religion. In this interdisciplinary examination, Jeanette Rodriguez and Ted Fortier explore how four such forms of cultural memory have preserved the spirit of a particular people. Cultural Memory is not a comparative work, but it is a multicultural one, with four distinct case studies: the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and the devotion it inspires among Mexican Americans; the role of secrecy and ceremony among the Yaqui Indians of Arizona; the evolving narrative of Archbishop Oscar Romero of San Salvador as transmitted through the church of the poor and the martyrs; and the syncretism of Catholic Tzeltal Mayans of Chiapas, Mexico. In each case, the authors' religious credentials eased the resistance encountered by social scientists and other researchers. The result is a landmark work in cultural studies, a conversation between a liberation theologian and a cultural anthropologist on the religious nature of cultural memory and the power it brings to those who wield it. .

On the Wind: The Marine Photographs of Norman Fortier (Imago Mundi Book)
Since 1947 the marine photographer Norman Fortier has embraced the south coast of Massachusetts and Rhode Island as his studio and his inspiration. His cameras have captured images of every conceivable description on the waters from Block Island to outer Cape Cod and the offshore islands: yachts and small craft under sail and at anchor; draggers and trawlers bound to and from Georges Bank; runabouts and sportfishermen dockside and at speed; commercial vessels and tall ships. And, always, his images capture the beauty and ever-changing moods of the region's coastline, harbors, and islands. Over the years his photographs have appeared in America's best boating magazines. In 1967 he published his first collection of yachting images, The Bay and the Sound, which rapidly went through four printings. More recently, the New Bedford Whaling Museum celebrated Fortier's six decades as a professional photographer with a major retrospective exhibition of his work displaying his deep roots in New Bedford, his intense love of Buzzards Bay, the Elizabeth Islands, and surrounding waters, and his uncanny ability to depict the complex interrelationship of humans, boats, and the sea. Beginning with early images of Padanaram Harbor, On the Wind carries the viewer west to Rhode Island Sound and Newport, east to Mattapoisett, Marion, and harbors at the head of Buzzards Bay. Succeeding chapters cover Martha's Vineyard and the offshore islands, the port of New Bedford and working craft, the grand spectacle that is the New York Yacht Club's annual summer cruise, and boats designed and built in South Dartmouth by the legendary Concordia Company. Printed entirely in duotone, this is a book about sailing and sailors, harbors and fishermen, selected from more than 100,000 negatives. It is also a moving and unforgettable evocation of a time and way of life that have already passed into memory..
