Deerskins Into Buckskins: How To Tan With Natural Materials, a Field Guide for Hunters and Gatherers

Detailed photographs and illustrations, a simple to follow style and sixteen years of experience teaching thousands of people how to tan, allow Matt Richards to show you exactly what you need to know to successfully turn your deer elk, moose or buffalo skins into the leather preferred by outdoorsmen and native peoples for millennia. You’ll learn the traditional methods of brain tanning as well as how to use a dozen eggs or soap and oil instead. This revised and updated edition includes substantial improvements to the process that make it even easier for you to produce soft and durable buckskin.
What’s New
A new 15 minute step that creates:
• Easier to soften hides
• Hides that come out super soft
• Hides that take the dressing even when dry, which in turn:
• Removes the variability of trying to get the perfect moisture content before dressing
• Makes it much easier to get complete brain penetration on thick hides, which makes tanning thicker hides such as moose, elk or even thick deer, way less work.
• Makes it so you can skip one of the wringing steps (which takes 15 minutes itself).
Other key new highlights include:
• Different skinning cuts for a better hide shape.
• How to tan Moose, Elk & Antelope
• Bibliography (thorough and user-friendly)
• Important improvements to the Bucking process.
• Important improvements to the Dressing step to ensure success for first timers.
• A step-by-step guide to varying this books’ Basic Method if you want to try the ‘pre-smoking’ method, or if you want to tan without the bucking step.

Buckskin is durable, soft, washable and warm. A hand-made garment for people all over the word for millennia, it breathes and stretches with your body, cuts the wind and won’t tear on briars. It is excellent to wear hiking, hunting or around the house. Plus you don’t need to hunt. Deer skins that would otherwise go to waste are available every fall from neighbors, locals and butcher shops..

The Evolution Diet: What and How We Were Designed to Eat, Second Edition
For nearly two million years, humans and our hominid ancestors were eating in the hunter/gatherer style of foraging for a wide variety of healthy fruits and vegetables and then hunting and scavenging for large game. However, about 9,000 years ago, humans started eating in a manner contrary to their design, while living increasingly sedentary lives. Author Joseph SB Morse shows in The Evolution Diet how we can achieve ultimate health by emulating our ancestors' hunter/gatherer lifestyle. You're about to embark on an insightful, and often humorous journey to discover how humans evolved to eat, what cultureless humans would eat, and how we can use that knowledge with today's technology and wealth to develop the ideal diet. The benefits of The Evolution Diet are immediate and include attaining an ideal weight, achieving balanced energy throughout the day, and better sleep. If you've been asking yourself what and how we were designed to eat, Morse's The Evolution Diet is the answer..

The Wakame Gatherers
Nanami has two grandmothers: Baachan, who lives with her family in Japan, and Gram, who lives in Maine. When Gram visits Japan for the first time, Baachan takes her and Nanami on a trip to the seaside to gather Wakame, a long, curvy seaweed that floats near the shore.

While the three assemble their equipment and ride the streetcar to the beach, Baachan explains how Wakame and other seaweeds are used in Japan. Gram shares stories about how seaweeds are used in Maine, and Nanami translates for them both.

By the end of the day, Nanami's two grandmothers discover that they have much in common despite being from countries that fought in the war they both remember vividly. Now, looking out across the beach at the surfers, dog walkers, and seaweed gatherers, they share an appreciation of this precious peace. Holly Thompson's beautiful prose captures the exuberance of a young girl who easily traverses between two cultures and languages. It also illuminates the love and understanding that grow between two older women who are so different, yet share an unbreakable bond. Kazumi Wild's bright, vivid paintings make the Japanese landscape and the rocky shores of Maine come alive, reminding us all that we share this earth and the peace that we create..

Nature and History in the Potomac Country: From Hunter-Gatherers to the Age of Jefferson

James D. Rice's fresh study of the Potomac River basin begins with a mystery Why, when the whole of the region offered fertile soil and excellent fishing and hunting, was nearly three-quarters of the land uninhabited on the eve of colonization? Rice wonders how the existence of this no man's land influenced nearby Native American and, later, colonial settlements. Did it function as a commons, as a place where all were free to hunt and fish? Or was it perceived as a strange and hostile wilderness?

Rice discovers environmental factors at the center of the story. Making use of extensive archaeological and anthropological research, as well as the vast scholarship on farming practices in the colonial period, he traces the region's history from its earliest known habitation. With exceptionally vivid prose, Rice makes clear the implications of unbridled economic development for the forests, streams, and wetlands of the Potomac River basin. With what effects, Rice asks, did humankind exploit and then alter the landscape and the quality of the river's waters?

Equal parts environmental, Native American, and colonial history, Nature and History in the Potomac Country is a useful and innovative study of the Potomac River, its valley, and its people.

Hunter-Gatherer Childhoods: Evolutionary, Developmental, and Cultural Perspectives (Evolutionary Foundations of Human Behavior)
In the vast anthropological literature devoted to hunter-gatherer societies, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the place of hunter-gatherer children Children often represent 40 percent of hunter-gatherer populations, thus nearly half the population is omitted from most hunter-gatherer ethnographies and research. This volume is designed to bridge the gap in our understanding of the daily lives, knowledge, and development of hunter-gatherer children. The twenty-six contributors to Hunter-Gatherer Childhoods use three general but complementary theoretical approaches - evolutionary, developmental, cultural - in their presentations of new and insightful ethnographic data. For instance, the authors employ these theoretical orientations to provide the first systematic studies of hunter-gatherer children's hunting, play, infant care by children, weaning and expressions of grief. The chapters focus on understanding the daily life experiences of children, and their views and feelings about their lives and cultural change. Chapters address some of the following questions: why does childhood exist, who cares for hunter-gatherer children, what are the characteristic features of hunter-gatherer children's development and what are the impacts of culture change on hunter-gatherer child care? The book is divided into five parts. The first section provides historical, theoretical and conceptual framework for the volume; the second section examines data to test competing hypotheses regarding why childhood is particularly long in humans; the third section expands on the second section by looking at who cares for hunter-gatherer children; the fourth section explores several developmental issues such as weaning, play and loss of loved ones; and, the final section examines the impact of sedentism and schools on hunter-gatherer children. This pioneering volume will help to stimulate further research and scholarship on hunter-gatherer childhoods, thereby advancing our understanding of the way of life that characterized most of human history and of the processes that may have shaped both human development and human evolution..
