The Codes of Hammurabi and Moses
The Hammurabi Code is of paramount interest, not only to the student of the Bible, but also to all those interested in ancient history. This document carries us back to gray antiquity; to what was once regarded as prehistoric times; to a period long antedating the promulgation of the laws of Moses. The astounding information that a long code of laws, dating back to a time nearly one thousand years before the age of Moses, had been discovered produced great excitement among Bible students the world over. The Code was written on a rude piece of black diorite, nearly eight feet high, and more than seven feet in width. Both sides of the monument are covered with writing. This classic translation into English, made by W.W. Davies, is now available from The Apocryphile Press..

The Code of Hammurabi (Forgotten Books)
Book Description:

"The Code of Hammurabi (also known as the Codex Hammurabi and Hammurabi's Code) was created ca. 1760 BC (middle chronology) and is one of the earliest extant sets of laws, and one of the best preserved examples of this type of document from ancient Babylon. It was created by the sixth Babylonian King, Hammurabi. Earlier collections of laws include the codex of Ur-Nammu, king of Ur (ca. 2050 BC), the Codex of Eshnunna (ca. 1930 BC) and the codex of Lipit-Ishtar of Isin (ca. 1870 BC).

[...]

The text contains a list of crimes and their various punishments, as well as settlements for common disputes and guidelines for citizens' conduct. The Code does not provide opportunity for explanation or excuses, though it does imply one's right to present evidence. The stele was openly displayed for all to see; thus, no man could plead ignorance of the law as an excuse. Scholars, however, presume that few people could read in that era, as literacy was primarily the domain of scribes.

[This text was excavated in 1901; it was carved on an eight foot high stone monolith.]" (Quote from wikipedia.org)

The Life & Times of Hammurabi (Biography from Ancient Civilizations) (Biography from Ancient Civilizations)
Hammurabi was an important leader in ancient Mesopotamia. Following the model of the warrior-king Sargon, Hammurabi built the tiny city-state of Babylon into a vast empire. He was recognized as a hands-on ruler. Not content to delegate duties to governors and advisors, Hammurabi was personally involved with all the goings-on in his empire. From the digging of canals to the construction of huge temples, Hammurabi was not only informed, he was in charge. Hammurabi was very interested in justice and fairness. He thought of himself as the shepherd and protector of all his people. He wanted everyone, the poor and the wealthy, to be treated fairly. In the second half of his reign, Hammurabi compiled a lengthy collection of laws into a single code. It is one of the oldest known law codes. You can find reminders of this ancient code in law books around the world..
