Improvise.: Scene from the Inside Out

For more than 20 years of directing, teaching, and participating in improvisation, Mick Napier has watched thousands of scenes. His experience as founder of the acclaimed Annoyance Theatre/Annoyance Productions, as well as Resident Director and Artistic Consultant for The Second City, has led him to continually question why and how scenes work or don't work and what one must do in order for a scene to be successful.

In this book, Napier takes an irreverent, but constructive look at the art and practice of improvised scenes. He covers such topics as:

  • two-person scenes
  • group scenes
  • entering scenes
  • techniques to achieve richer, more layered scenes
  • auditioning
  • solo exercises for practice at home.
Napier also challenges the conventional wisdom of the rules of improvisation, examining what's behind them and how they came to be in the first place.

Get helpful, tangible guidelines for bringing strength and direction to your scenes. Just Improvise..

How to Improvise
by Hal Crook. Book/2CDs. What exactly are the steps that lead to ability? In which order should they been taken? What will be required to master each one? These are questions the author has explored in this book, resulting in a rather unique "one-thing-at-a-time" approach to studying improvisation - one that incorporates discipline, technique, creativity and musical intuition. Each topic is explained and demonstrated using written musical examples and it is accompanied by suggested exercises and a sample daily practice schedule, which can be modified to fit your own needs or liking. The book has been used by the Performance Studies Department of the Berklee College of Music in Boston for teaching improvisation since September 1988..

INTRODUCTION

"What improvising means"

im-pro-vise: to make, substitute for, rearrange or create from what is on hand or convenient into something that is needed; using "Yankee Ingenuity"

This book was written as a reference guide. It would be a good idea to read through it before going into the wilds, but it is meant to be taken with you, if for no other reason than when you need a firestarter (the last pages are there for just that use).

Along with being a reference for improvising, it is also a directory of priorities and things you can do to help yourself survive when the unexpected happens.

If you should ever find yourself in a serious situation, you need to use reason (and common sense) to get yourself found, to get to help, etc. Panicking won't do it—it can just get you killed.

The sections in this book include:

Section 1 — Pre-Trip Planning information. Covers basic planning for outings, trips, etc. It includes some ideas for make-ahead items that might become useful if you run into trouble.

Section 2 — What you can do with what you have with/on you. It lists most of the things you would be wearing or carrying that are not normally survival equipment, and their many and varied uses; with illustrations

Section 3 — Improvising to Survive. What you might need in a survival situation and what you have with you and can find around you that can be substituted. Includes illustrations.

Section 4 — "How to: Use What you Have To Do What You Need," contains directions with illustrations for collecting water, starting and maintaining fires, building shelters in different weather conditions, and other survival aids using "Yankee Ingenuity" and supplies on hand. Includes illustrations.

Section 5 — How To Survive. It includes general information, priorities of survival, specific ideas and information combined with lots of good common sense.

Section 6 — Environmental hazards. Covers some of the most common environmental hazards and suggestions for avoiding and evading them..
