Jungle Ace: Col. Gerald R. Johnson, the USAAF's Top Fighter Leader of the Pacific War
Illuminates the life of a unique warrior, who was both a daredevil fighter ace and a highly effective combat leader

Contains dozens of previously unpublished photographs and compelling details about life in the Pacific Theater, based on public archives, personal papers, and history interviews

 Examines major aerial combat actions from the Aleutian Islands to the Southwest Pacific Theater

The brief but accomplished life of Army Air Forces fighter ace Gerald Johnson (1920-1945) is the subject of John Bruning's latest book. Flying the powerful P-38 and possessing lethal shooting skill, Johnson shot down 24 Japanese aircraft in 265 combat missions during thirty-six months in the Pacific Theater. At the age of 24, he commanded the highest-scoring fighter group in the Pacific, the 49th. With Dick Bong and Tommy McGuire, he formed an early triumvirate of 5th Air Force aces. A fellow pilot later called him "the Luke Skywalker of my generation." Tragically, though Johnson had survived three combat tours, which included a mid-air collision with a Japanese aircraft and being shot down by friendly fire, the new father disappeared without a trace while flying a courier mission in bad weather one month after war's end and shortly before his planned return home. At the time, he was one of the youngest full colonels in the U.S. Army Air Force..

The Messman Chronicles: African-Americans in the U.S. Navy, 1932-1943
Despite racial discrimination and second-class status within the enlisted corps, the U.S. Navy's mess attendants, officer's cooks, and stewards compiled a proud legacy of combat service in World War II. The heroism of a few like "Dorie" Miller became well known to the American public, but most have long been forgotten. This book tells the story of those thousands of unheralded sailors of African descent who served in frontline combat with fellow "messmen" of Filipino, Guamanian, and Chinese ancestry from the first day of war to the last. Their story begins with recruit training in the racially segregated confines of Norfolk, Virginia's Units K-West and B-East during the 1930s and proceeds through the perilous early months of war. Though long disparaged as "seagoing chambermaids" and worse, they gallantly upheld the honor of their race while shedding their blood in full proportion in some of history's greatest naval battles.

For this first major study of the subject, Richard E. Miller draws on a wealth of previously untapped primary documents and more than forty oral history interviews that he conducted. The men he interviewed served at the Naval Academy and aboard ships of all types prior to their wartime service. Miller focuses on the period from late 1932, when the Navy reopened its doors to black men, to 1943, when the ranks of the re-named "steward's branch" had grown and become transformed by the influx of wartime inductees. Collectively, the interviews cover nearly every naval campaign in the first two years of war. This unexplored perspective of the U.S. Navy puts a face on the "greatest generation's" last overlooked heroes while making a significant contribution to the operational, social, and cultural history of the U.S. Navy. 15 photographs. 6 x 9 inches..

The Odyssey of a U-Boat Commander: Recollections of Erich Topp
Admiral Topp's memoirs reflect the faith, hopes, errors, and transformations in a man's life, indeed those of a whole generation whose understanding of history and ideology were held captive by the myth of power. The terrible annihilation in World War II and, even more so, the unimaginable destructive potential of nuclear weapons, have resulted in a change in the use of power. The author's diaries and journals, along with their contemporary interpretation, illustrate the political dimension of this change. Topp wrote this book to illuminate a segment of twentieth century history which "can only be portrayed truthfully by those who themselves have lived and suffered through it." Topp also describes freely the era of the Third Reich. Even today, after long years of occupying positions of leadership, the author feels the burden of historical responsibility. In this sense his book is a statement about the ambivalence of human existence. It provides answers to the question of why a whole generation of Germans followed the mesmerizing siren song of a totalitarian regime, an experience which still looms like a shadow over the living..

Military Innovation in the Interwar Period
This study of major military innovations in the 1920s and 1930s explores differences in innovating exploitation by the seven major military powers. This volume of comparative essays investigates how and why innovation occurred or did not occur, and explains much of the strategic and operative performance of the Axis and Allies in World War II..

UMTS Network Planning, Optimization, and Inter-Operation with GSM
UMTS Network Planning, Optimization, and Inter-Operation with GSM is an accessible, one-stop reference to help engineers effectively reduce the time and costs involved in UMTS deployment and optimization. Rahnema includes detailed coverage from both a theoretical and practical perspective on the planning and optimization aspects of UMTS, and a number of other new techniques to help operators get the most out of their networks.
  • Provides an end-to-end perspective, from network design to optimization
  • Incorporates the hands-on experiences of numerous researchers
  • Single authorship allows for strong coherency and accessibility
  • Details the complete iteration cycle of radio link budgeting for coverage planning and dimensioning

Rahnema demonstrates detailed formulation of radio capacity and coverage in UMTS, and discusses the tradeoffs involved. He presents complete link budgeting and iterative simulations for capacity and coverage planning, along with practical guidelines. UMTS Network Planning contains seventeen cohesive and well-organized chapters which cover numerous topics, including:

  • Radio channel structures, radio channel models, parameters, model tuning
  • Techniques for capacity and coverage enhancements
  • Complete treatment of power control, handoffs and radio resource practical management processes and parameters
  • Detailed coverage of TCP protocol enhancement for operation over wireless links, particularly UMTS
  • Application of GSM measurements to plan and re-engineer for UMTS radio sites
  • Guidelines for site co-location with GSM, the QOS classes, parameters and inter-workings in UMTS
  • AMR voice codecs and tradeoffs, core and access network design, architectural evolution, and protocols
  • Comprehensive discussion and presentation of practical techniques for radio performance analysis, trending, and troubleshooting

Perfect for professionals in the field and researchers specializing in network enhancement. Engineers working on other air interfaces and next generation technologies will find many of the techniques introduced helpful in designing and deploying future wireless networks as well. Students and professionals new to the wireless field will also find this book to be a good foundation in network planning, performance analysis, and optimization.
