When I Grow up: A Memoir
Ask a young girl what she wants to be when she grows up, and there's a good chance she'll say "rock star." Ask a rock star what she wants to be when she grows up, and it gets a bit more complicated

By the early nineties, singer/songwriter and former Blake Babies member Juliana Hatfield was in a position most aspiring alternative rockers can only dream of: Her solo career was taking off. She was on the cover of Spin and Sassy. Ben Stiller directed the video for her song "Spin the Bottle" from the Reality Bites film soundtrack. She was a featured guest on My So-Called Life. Then, after canceling a European tour to treat severe depression and failing to produce another "hit," she was dropped by her record label and spent a decade releasing well-reviewed albums on indie labels and performing in ever-smaller clubs. A few years ago, now in her thirties, she found herself quietly reading the New Yorker on a filthy couch in the tiny dressing room of a punk club, and asked herself, "Why am I still doing this?"

By turns wryly funny and woundingly sincere, When I Grow Up takes readers behind the scenes of rock life as Hatfield recounts her best and worst days, the origins of her songs, the source of her woes, and her quest to find a new purpose in life. Writing with the same talent for lyricism and poetry found in her songs, Hatfield has produced an engaging literary memoir that will resonate with anyone who's lost faith in a dream..

Looking For Miza

In a magical place called the Congo, in the beautiful forests and jungles of Virunga National Park, lives a young female mountain gorilla named Miza. She was just like any other baby gorilla, riding on her mother's back, playing, taking naps. Then, one day, when Miza and her mother were out searching for food, Miza's mother disappeared, leaving her baby alone and frightened. Miza's father, a fierce silverback named Kabirizi and the leader of Virunga's largest family of mountain gorillas, set out to find Miza. The Congolese rangers, who dedicate their lives to protecting the gorillas, were searching for Miza, too. Everyone was worried about her. Then something amazing happened: Kabirizi found Miza and brought her back to live with her family.

Virunga is home to roughly 380 mountain gorillas, just over half of the planet's remaining mountain gorilla population. Miza and other mountain gorillas face an especially uncertain future. They are an endangered species, disappearing at an alarming speed. Without our help they could vanish completely.

Filled with lush photographs by award-winning photographer Peter Greste, LOOKING FOR MIZA is a powerful call to action. The fate of these majestic creatures is in our hands. This is Miza's story. It's our story, too.

Into the Story: Language in Action Through Drama

After years of research and teaching, Carole Miller and Juliana Saxton know one of the most engaging and effective tools to draw students into language, comprehension, and inquiry - and that's drama. Into the Story is a highly practical resource for language arts and literacy development based on "story drama structures" that have been piloted in elementary and middle school classrooms. The book consists of ten lesson units capitalizing on the friendliness of picture books that can be found in any library. Its unique attribute is its accessibility to teachers with little or no training in drama or theatre.

Into the Story offers lessons that engage students in authentic encounters with ideas and dilemmas found in both the curriculum and their world. Story drama structures balance informational, expressive, and interactional language that appeals to generalist teachers K-7. What's more, the attention to detail will give teachers the confidence to work with what is, for many, a new methodology. For teachers familiar with drama, the same structures may be used as stepping off points or as models for planning their own lessons.

Miller and Saxton have created a resource in which teachers and students can discover how, by entering the story, drama becomes a compelling medium for learning. More than that, they've made it inviting, nonintimidating, and enticingly available. Alison Preece, a leading authority on language and literacy, says it simply: "This works."
