Life
One of photographys watershed moments occurred in 1965, when the cover of Life magazine featured Lennart Nilssons photograph of a living human embryothe first time life at such an early stage had been captured on film. His classic bestseller A Child Is Born featured stunning photographs of life in the womb and earned him the sobriquet The da Vinci of medical photography ( Chicago Tribune). Now, in this major work, Nilssons extraordinary images encompass a full human lifespan. Using the worlds most exacting equipment, Nilsson reveals the interior form of the entire human body and its intricate workings as never seen before, in a book that is as stunning to behold as its contents. Featuring thoughtful essays by both a noted scientist and a renowned editor, LIFE shines a penetrating light on all of lifes fundamentals. .

Anatomy of Neuropsychiatry: The New Anatomy of the Basal Forebrain and its Implications for Neuropsychiatric Illness
This book presents the anatomical systems that take part in the scientific and clinical study of emotional functions and neuropsychiatric disorders. It discusses the limbic systemthe cortical and subcortical structures in the human brain involved in emotion, motivation, and emotional association with memoryat length and how this is no longer a useful guide to the study of psychiatric disorders. The book provides an understanding of brain anatomy, with an emphasis on the new anatomical framework which has emerged during the last quarter century. The goal is to help the reader develop an understanding of the gross anatomical organization of the human forebrain. The book also includes an enlightening DVD describing the basic surface anatomy of the cerebral hemispheres, coronal and horizontal sections, and blunt dissection of the forebrain with special attention to clinical-anatomical correlations of interest to psychiatrists. * A re-evaluation of brain anatomy, with an emphasis on the new anatomical framework which has emerged during the last quarter century * A compellingly expanded conceptualization of Broca's famous limbic lobe * Clinical and basic science boxes highlighting specific concepts, structures, or neuronal circuits from a clinical perspective * DVD illustrating dissection of the human brain by one of the world's masters.

The Biochemical Machine: Empowering Your Body Chemistry
"If you burden your metabolism by eating incompatible foods that disregard the laws of your body chemistry," writes Eleonora De Lennart, you poison your body. Cooking, says De Lennart, changes ("denatures") the chemistry of proteins and turns them into "bad" and "extreme bad" proteins: "unhealthy acid-builders." We can handle digesting these only if eaten on their own. The solution: "A" and "B" foods that should not be eaten together, and "Neutral" foods that may be eaten with either "A" or "B" foods. "A" foods include grains, sugar products, starchy vegetables, and some fruits. "B" foods include low-fat dairy, cooked meats and seafood, cooked tomatoes, and some fruits. "Neutral" foods include fats, vegetables, high-fat dairy, and smoked, cured, and dried meat. Nix chicken sandwiches or pasta marinara. Eat potatoes without ketchup, cereal without orange juice. To get you started, De Lennart offers 240 pages of menu plans and recipes and handy pull-out charts. De Lennart bases her method on the work of William Howard Hay, M.D. (who, she says, was misunderstood and therefore never received the Nobel prize). She refers to her "groundbreaking research" yet inexplicably gives no information about her credentials--except that her specialty is the Science of Consciousness and she wrote The Race That Should Be Human. Admittedly not a "medicine-man" or biochemist, she bases her conclusions on her personal experience and her own research (which, as far as we can tell, is anecdotal). --Joan Price.

How Was I Born?: A Child's Journey Through the Miracle of Birth
Ever since the publication of the magnificent third edition of A Child Is Born, Lennart Nilsson has devoted himself to retelling this magical story especially for children. How Was I Born? closely follows the experience of Mary who is nearly five and her family as they lovingly prepare to welcome a new baby. The book matches Mary's insatiable curiosity, impatience, and concern with gentle, reassuring information. Nilsson's spectacular photographs illustrate Mary's actual questions: when she wonders how big the baby is, one photo shows an ant on her brother's fingertip, opposite the exact image of her future sibling at that time. When she asks how the baby eats, the reader sees her drinking through a straw as the baby-to-be feeds through the umbilical cord. Meant to be read by a child alone or with a parent, How Was I Born? answers all the questions children ask about pregnancy and childbirth--the biological as well as the emotional ones. Perfect for children aged five and up, it is also a wonderful book of all ages. From the Hardcover edition..

Modeling of Dynamic Systems (Prentice Hall Information and System Sciences Series)
Written by a recognized authority in the field of identification and control, this book draws together into a single volume the important aspects of system identification AND physical modelling. KEY TOPICS: Explores techniques used to construct mathematical models of systems based on knowledge from physics, chemistry, biology, etc. (e.g., techniques with so called bond-graphs, as well those which use computer algebra for the modeling work). Explains system identification techniques used to infer knowledge about the behavior of dynamic systems based on observations of the various input and output signals that are available for measurement. Shows how both types of techniques need to be applied in any given practical modeling situation. Considers applications, primarily simulation. For practicing engineers who are faced with problems of modeling..

Ptolemy's "Geography": An Annotated Translation of the Theoretical Chapters
Ptolemy's Geography is the only book on cartography to have survived from the classical period and one of the most influential scientific works of all time. Written in the second century AD, for more than fifteen centuries it was the most detailed topography of Europe and Asia available and the best reference on how to gather data and draw maps. Ptolemy championed the use of astronomical observation and applied mathematics in determining geographical locations. But more importantly, he introduced the practice of writing down coordinates of latitude and longitude for every feature drawn on a world map, so that someone else possessing only the text of the Geography could reproduce Ptolemy's map at any time, in whole or in part, at any scale. Here Berggren and Jones render an exemplary translation of the Geography and provide a thorough introduction, which treats the historical and technical background of Ptolemy's work, the contents of the Geography, and the later history of the work. Also included here are unique color reproductions of maps from manuscripts and early printed editions of the text, representative of the beautiful and practical cartographic artistry that flowed from Ptolemy's work. Historians of science, classicists, and anyone who enjoys beautiful maps or map making will find this work an indispensable addition to their library. .
