Discovering Canada: The Mounties (Discovering Canada)
The scarlet tunic of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is recognized throughout the world. It's been worn since 1873 when Prime Minister John A. Macdonald created the original force-the North-West Mounted Police-to round up horse thieves and whiskey smugglers on the Prairies.
The Mounties presents the amazing stories of such larger-than-life figures as James Macleod, an officer who befriended the powerful Blackfoot chief, Crowfoot; James Morrow Walsh, who won the trust of Sitting Bull when he arrived in Canada after the massacre at Little Big Horn; Jerry Potts, the famous Métis scout and interpreter; and Sam Steele, the superintendent who kept the peace during the Klondike Gold Rush.
Today, the Mounties are a much larger force and operate with sophisticated equipment and modern technology. But at the heart of the RCMP are the brave men and women who risk their lives maintaining law and order across the country.

Policing the Great Plains: Rangers, Mounties, and the North American Frontier, 1875-1910
In the late nineteenth century, the Texas Rangers and Canada’s North-West Mounted Police were formed to bring the resource-rich hinterlands at either end of the Great Plains under governmental control. Native and rural peoples often found themselves squarely in the path of this westward expansion and the law enforcement agents that led the way. Though separated by nearly two thousand miles, the Rangers and Mounties performed nearly identical functions, including subjugating Indigenous groups; dispossessing peoples of mixed ancestry; defending the property of big cattlemen; and policing industrial disputes. Yet the means by which the two forces achieved these ends sharply diverged; while the Rangers often relied on violence, the Mounties usually exercised restraint, a fact that highlights some of the fundamental differences between the U.S. and Canadian Wests. Policing the Great Plains presents the first comparative history of the two most famous constabularies in the world. (08/10/2006).

Assessing Deaf Adults: Critical Issues in Testing and Evaluation
Historically, deaf and hard of hearing people have demonstrated various levels of competence in a multitude of professions, but they also have experienced discrimination and oppression In five critical sections, this volume responds to the tidal wave of high-stakes testing that has come to dominate educational policy and qualification for various occupations. It provides a digest of relevant research to meet the testing challenge, including work done by educational researchers, legal experts, test developers, and others. Section I frames the contexts facing deaf and hard of hearing individuals and those who test them, including a telling historical perspective. In Section II, chapters explore how deaf and hard of hearing candidates can meet the rigors of test-taking, how to level the playing field with a new approach to assessment, and what to consider to develop fully accessible licensing tests. The final chapter in this part examines the psychometric properties of intellectual assessments when used with deaf and hard of hearing people. Administrative Issues constitute Section III, beginning with legal considerations related to equity testing for deaf adults. An exploration of the potential of sign language interpretation in the testing environment follows. Section IV provides case studies of deaf and hard of hearing adults from a variety of professions, including certification testing for therapeutic recreation, preparation strategies for university students, and ways to maximize access to licensure for social workers. A separate chapter addresses the impact of recent federal mandates on assessment of deaf and hard of hearing teachers and teaching candidates. The final section summarizes the current situation and presents recommendations to manage it, concluding with an epilogue on directions for the future..

The Life and Times of the Steamboat Red Cloud, or, How Merchants, Mounties, and the Missouri Transformed the West (Ed Rachal Foundation Nautical Archaeology Series)
In July 1882, the steamboat Red Cloud hit a snag near Fort Peck, Montana, and settled into the bed of the Missouri River with a full cargo. The flagship of I. G. Baker & Company, it had served as an agent of change in the West through which it traveled The Red Cloud was a symboland a sourceof the trading company's success. This stern-wheeled, wooden-hulled packet boat carried both cargo and passengers on a "floating palace." When it sank five years later, though, the transcontinental railroad was already displacing the steamboat as the preferred way to transport both people and cargo. The first book to view the development of the Canadian Rockies from a maritime perspective, The Life and Times of the Steamboat Red Cloud ties the Missouri River's commercial development with the opening of the Canadian West and with the formation of the Canadian North-West Mounted Police. Readers interested in western history, maritime history, and nautical archaeology will find this book an invaluable addition to their libraries..
