Handbook of Refractory Carbides and Nitrides: Properties, Characteristics, Processing and Apps. (Materials Science and Process Technology)

Refractory carbides and nitrides are useful materials with numerous industrial applications and a promising future, in addition to being materials of great interest to the scientific community. Although most of their applications are recent, the refractory carbides and nitrides have been known for over one hundred years.

The industrial importance of the refractory carbides and nitrides is growing rapidly, not only in the traditional and well-established applications based on the strength and refractory nature of these materials such as cutting tools and abrasives, but also in new and promising fields such as electronics and opto-electronics. Some typical applications are as follows:

1. Silicon-nitride rotors, blades, rings, and burner tiles for gas turbines;

2) Tungsten-carbide cutting tools;

3) Titanium-nitride coatings on high-speed steel drill bits;

4) Silicon-carbide fibers and whiskers;

5) Boron-carbide abrasive blast nozzles;

6) Aluminum-nitride high thermal conductivity substrates for electronic circuits;

7) Silicon carbide burner tubes for gas furnaces;

8) Titanium nitride passivating and electrically insulating coatings for semiconductor devices;

9) Silicon carbide high-temperature semiconductor devices;

10) Silicon carbide blue light-emitting diode (LED).

The refractory carbides and nitrides are reviewed together in one book because:

1. They form two families of closely related materials which have similar atomic structures and chemistry.

2. Carbon and nitrogen are next to each other the second period of the Table of the Elements and, in many cases, the carbides and nitrides form solid solutions (known as carbonitrides).

3. Many of their properties are similar.

4. They have essentially the same processing characteristics and basically the same applications.

5. In many respects, they complement each other.

The main objectives of this book can be summarized as follows:

1. Provide a complete review of the structures and properties of refractor carbides and nitrides

2. Provide a thorough assessment of the technology, processing, and equipment and systems used in production and R&D, with emphasis on advanced designs

3. Identify and describe the applications, particularly new and emerging areas.

The Blue Laser Diode: The Complete Story
Shuji Nakamura's development of a blue semiconductor laser on the basis of GaN opens the way for a host of new applications of semiconductor lasers. The wavelengths can be tuned by controlling the composition. For the first time it is possible to produce lasers with various wavelengths, ranging from red through yellow and green to blue, in one substrate material. This fact, together with their high efficiency, makes GaN-based lasers very useful for a wide spectrum of applications. The second edition of this basic book on GaN-based devices has been updated and significantly extended. It includes a survey of worldwide research on GaN, as well as Nakamura's latest important developments. The reader finds a careful introduction to the physics and properties of GaN. The main part of the book deals with the production and characteristics of GaN LDs and LEDs. To complete the spectrum of applications, GaN power devices are also described..

Nitride Semiconductor Devices: Principles and Simulation
This is the first book to be published on physical principles, mathematical models, and practical simulation of GaN-based devices. Gallium nitride and its related compounds enable the fabrication of highly efficient light-emitting diodes and lasers for a broad spectrum of wavelengths, ranging from red through yellow and green to blue and ultraviolet. Since the breakthrough demonstration of blue laser diodes by Shuji Nakamura in 1995, this field has experienced tremendous growth worldwide. Various applications can be seen in our everyday life, from green traffic lights to full-color outdoor displays to high-definition DVD players. In recent years, nitride device modeling and simulation has gained importance and advanced software tools are emerging. Similar developments occurred in the past with other semiconductors such as silicon, where computer simulation is now an integral part of device development and fabrication.

This book presents a review of modern device concepts and models, written by leading researchers in the field. It is intended for scientists and device engineers who are interested in employing computer simulation for nitride device design and analysis..

Gan-based Materials And Devices: Growth, Fabrication, Characterization & Performance (Selected Topics in Electronics and Systems, Vol. 33)
The unique materials properties of GaN-based semiconductors have stimulated a great deal of interest in research and development regarding nitride materials growth and optoelectronic and nitride-based electronic devices. High electron mobility and saturation velocity, high sheet carrier concentration at heterojunction interfaces, high breakdown field, and low thermal impedance of GaN-based films grown over SiC or bulk AlN substrates make nitride-based electronic devices very promising. The chemical inertness of nitrides is another key property.

This volume, written by experts on different aspects of nitride technology, addresses the entire spectrum of issues related to nitride materials and devices, and it will be useful for technologists, scientists, engineers, and graduate students who are working on wide bandgap materials and devices. The book can also be used as a supplementary text for graduate courses on wide bandgap semiconductor technology..

Aluminum Nitride Thin Films - Deposition for Fabrication, Characterization and Fabrication of Surface Acoustic Wave Devices
Aluminum Nitride (AlN) thin films can be used for many device applications; for example, Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) applications, and packaging applications. In this work, AlN is the critical layer in the fabrication process. One challenge is reliable deposition over wafer size substrates. The method of interest for deposition is pulsed DC sputtering. The (002) plane is the desired plane for its piezoelectric properties. The surface roughness of the deposited AlN is low and adheres well to the substrate. An AlN layer was deposited on a UNCD/Si substrate. Al was deposited on the AlN layer to form the IDTs (interdigital transducers) for SAW devices. SAW devices were fabricated on quartz - ST substrate. To verify the SAW devices work, they were tested using a network analyzer. This book discusses these results and parameters for AlN film deposition, film properties and implications for devices. This book would be beneficial for professionals, scientists, engineers, and graduate students in science and engineering working in the areas of wide bandgap semi-conductors, nitrides and piezoelectric materials and various acoustic wave devices..
