Nitty-Gritty Grammar: A Not-So-Serious Guide to Clear Communication
This is a good, solid guide to basic grammar by two women who claim to be "nutty enough to have liked diagramming in school." Their book is clear. It is not boring. It even compares punctuation marks to traffic signals (a period is a stop sign, a comma a flashing yellow light). But its crowning glory is the nearly 30 cartoons--from Sally Forth, Beetle Bailey, The Far Side, and others--on the subject of grammar that are sure to delight anyone who is nutty enough to have liked diagramming in school. In our favorite, Hobbes tries to persuade Calvin that a pronoun is "a noun that lost its amateur status." Calvin, after pondering for a moment, writes it down. "Maybe I can get a point for originality," he says. --Jane Steinberg.

More Nitty-Gritty Grammar
Grammar guides can be dry and pedantic, or they can imbue their somewhat tedious subject with warmth and humor. More Nitty-Gritty Grammar is the latter sort. An A-to-Z (OK, A-to-Y) guide, it appeals to contemporary students of grammar--be they actual students, workplace writers, or others--with examples they can relate to. Authors Edith H. Fine and Judith P. Josephson call upon Hideo Nomo to clear up the difference between pitcher and picture; Gov. Jesse ("the body") Ventura to illustrate the proper form for a sobriquet; and Cheese Puffs to clear up the double-negative issue. Elsewhere, they refer to Viagra, carrot smoothies, and the Dixie Chicks. For rules that just won't stick, they provide mnemonics. While the book is devoted mostly to grammar basics, there are elements to delight even the sophisticated grammarian. Among them: a section on the correct use of the en dash and reprints of nearly 60 grammar-related cartoons. --Jane Steinberg.

The Basketball Coach's Bible: A Comprehensive and Systematic Guide to Coaching (Goldstein, Sidney. Nitty Gritty Basketball Series.)
The Basketball Coach's Bible claims to be essential reading for basketball coaches, whether they're coaching your daughter's fourth-grade team or a Division I college team. Endorsements are included from both youth coaches and well-known professional and college coaches such as Phil Jackson and Jim Calhoun. Can any book really cover a topic that broadly and do a good job? The resounding answer in this case is yes. Mr. Goldstein starts from the premise that if you learn the fundamentals well, the rest of the game comes along naturally. The first seven short chapters of the book lay out his philosophy of the game and coaching, providing a blueprint to follow. The remainder of the book has two parts, multipart lessons that focus on individual skills such as dribbling and passing, and another series of lessons on team offense and defense. Each lesson begins with a simple concept and then adds more complex features as your players' skills progress. Charts accompany each lesson and detail the prerequisite skills, time needed, and effort that is required. This book is one of those rare breeds that live up to its hype. One drawback is that younger players may not have enough practice time to complete all of the drills you would like, but those you do choose will be winners. --Rob Frankland.
