Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis: Modeling Change and Event Occurrence
Here is a much-needed professional book that will instruct readers in the many new methodologies now at their disposal to make the best use of longitudinal data. This book explains how to select an appropriate method given a research question, including how to use both individual growth modeling and survival analysis. Throughout the chapters, the authors employ many cases and examples from a variety of disciplines, covering multilevel models, curvilinear and discontinuous change, in addition to discrete-time hazard models, continuous-time event occurrence, and Cox regression models. Using Longitudinal Data is a unique contribution to the literature on research methods and will be useful to a wide range of behavioral and social science researchers..

Epidemiologic Methods: Studying the Occurrence of Illness (Medicine)
This is a rigorous, systematic introduction to the basic concepts and practical tools of epidemiologic research. It is aimed at readers who will be conducting epidemiologic studies themselves or who need a firm grasp of epidemiologic principles in order to interpret and evaluate studies conducted by others.
Besides offering clear descriptions of key concepts, the book is rich with examples illustrating how these concepts are applied. Some examples are drawn from classic studies in the field--the work of Snow, Semmelweis, Goldberger, Doll and Hill, and others--while many others concern modern-day epidemiologic studies of problems of current public health importance. Almost every chapter includes a set of exercises (with answers) to help students gain practice in applying new ideas and techniques.
The book's chapters are organized around three main themes: general concepts and methods of epidemiology; major study designs; and evaluating policies and programs. Collectively, these topics form the core material for a graduate-level course or course sequence in epidemiologic methods. Both authors are experienced epidemiologic researchers and have won multiple awards for effective teaching..

Pharma-Ecology: The Occurrence and Fate of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Environment
Pharmaceuticals and personal care products—we can't live without them. Can the environment survive with them?

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are increasingly being recognized as micropollutants. In this context, pharmaceutical products encompass a diverse range of drugs used to treat various illnesses, and personal care products include everyday items such as soaps, fragrances, cleaning agents, disinfectants, and similar products. Written for professionals from different backgrounds, Pharma-Ecology bridges the knowledge and language gap and critically examines the issue of PPCP micropollutants and how to best minimize their impact on the environment. Organized systematically, it:

  • Presents a range of pharmaceutical compounds categorized by mode of action and common usage, displaying the volumes (or number of prescriptions) that are dispersed
  • Discusses the detection of PPCPs in the environment using instrumentation and bioassay techniques, including microarrays
  • Covers the occurrences of PPCPs in aquatic systems, sediments, soil, and aerial environments
  • Considers the persistence and degradation of PPCPs in the environment, and links pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics with the kinetics of PPCPs in the environment
  • Explores engineering and treatment techniques that could minimize the impact of PPCPs in the environment
  • Includes numerous tables and figures that illustrate information
This is an enlightening reference for engineers, toxicologists, ecologists, micro-biologists, and chemists involved in pollution and environmental analysis; policy-makers; professionals in federal and state regulatory agencies; and pharmaceutical professionals. It is also an excellent text for undergraduate and graduate students in related fields..

An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge (Forgotten Books)

""An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" (sometimes called "An Incident at Owl Creek Bridge") is a famous short story by Ambrose Bierce. It was originally published in 1890, and first anthologized in Bierce's 1891 collection, Tales of Soldiers and Civilians. The story is famous for its irregular time sequence and twist ending.

Set during the American Civil War, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is the story of Peyton Farquhar, a Confederate sympathizer condemned to die by hanging upon the Owl Creek Bridge of the title. The main character finds himself already bound at the bridge's edge at the beginning of the story. It is later revealed that a disguised Union scout enlisted him to attempt to demolish the bridge, and subsequently he was caught in the act." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

About the Author

"Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (24 June 1842 - 1914) was an American editorialist, journalist, short-story writer and satirist, today best known for his An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge and The Devil's Dictionary.

His dark, sardonic views and vehemence as a critic earned him the nickname, "Bitter Bierce". Such was his reputation that it was said his judgment on any piece of prose or poetry could make or break a writer's career. Among the younger writers whom he encouraged were the poet George Sterling and the fiction writer W. C. Morrow." (Quote from wikipedia.org)

Occupancy Estimation and Modeling: Inferring Patterns and Dynamics of Species Occurrence
Occupancy Estimation and Modeling is the first book to examine the latest methods in analyzing presence/absence data surveys Using four classes of models (single-species, single-season; single-species, multiple season; multiple-species, single-season; and multiple-species, multiple-season), the authors discuss the practical sampling situation, present a likelihood-based model enabling direct estimation of the occupancy-related parameters while allowing for imperfect detectability, and make recommendations for designing studies using these models.

* Provides authoritative insights into the latest in estimation modeling
* Discusses multiple models which lay the groundwork for future study designs
* Addresses critical issues of imperfect detectibility and its effects on estimation
* Explores the role of probability in estimating in detail.

Birds of Nebraska: Their Distribution and Temporal Occurrence
Nebraska sits at the nexus of continental bird migration and serves as a home—either permanently or seasonally—for nearly 450 species Major migratory routes pass through the state, creating numerous opportunities to observe the great variety of North American bird species. The annual crane migrations in spring are legendary, and other key events include winter concentrations of bald eagles, flocks of up to thirty thousand grebes, mergansers, and gulls at Lake McConaughy in late fall, and incredible concentrations of waterfowl in the Rainwater Basin in early spring.

Birds of Nebraska captures the variety of Nebraska's ornithological possibilities in a style useful to hobbyists and professionals alike. For the first time in Nebraska ornithology, the authors have provided an exhaustive summary of state bird records compiled into concise but readable accounts of all species of birds reported in the state. This work covers taxonomy, early and late migration dates, high counts, nesting areas, and likely viewing locations.
