The Overspent American: Why We Want What We Don't Need
The Overspent American explores why so many of us feel materially dissatisfied, why we work staggeringly long hours and yet walk around with ever-present mental "wish lists" of things to buy or get, and why Americans save less than virtually anyone in the world. Unlike many experts, Harvard economist Juliet B. Schor does not blame consumers' lack of self-discipline. Nor does she blame advertisers. Instead she analyzes the crisis of the American consumer in a culture where spending has become the ultimate social art..

From the supplier: Economist and author Juliet Schor points out that the average American is spending more than they should and more than they had in the past. This is evident in the savings rate of the country which has dropped to practically zero. This means that the average household is spending all of their income. This is in contrast to the savings rate of 8% during the 1970s. This large drop in savings rate is being fueled by the increasing disparity between the incomes of various levels of society. This has caused those in the lower levels to spend more to keep up with the lifestyle of the upper 20%.
