Warehousing Violence (Frontiers of Anthropology)
From overcrowding to violence, the American prison system is facing its worst crisis in decades More and more inmates are classified as violent - permanent dangers to society. Warehousing Violence addresses an issue of major concern for the prison system - how to maintain order amongst violent criminals who are in prison for life.

How does an already overcrowded system `warehouse' its worst cases and still maintain a semblance of order and nonviolence behind prison walls? Fleisher, an anthropologist who served as a line corrections officer at a maximum security prison in California, points to the success of at least one programme in warehousing society's most violent people. Through a mixture of hands-on management, strict control and innovative prison industry, he shows how even the `hardest cases' can be kept relatively placid in prison.

This ethnographic account of life among inmates, staff and administrators makes an important contribution to the development of correction policies that work.

Dominican Penitent Women (Classics of Western Spirituality)
Dominican Penitent Women presents a fascinating overview of the spirituality, religious practices, and ways of life of medieval Italian women who belonged to the Dominican Order as lay members or penitents. Through selected texts, readers gain a fresh perspective on the institutional and spiritual foundations of Dominican lay life, but also an understanding of how these women refashioned Dominican ideals into practices that best responded to their individual and social means. Their way of life created an important alternative for women who sought religious perfection in the world.

The first section consists of two penitent rules: the Ordinationes of Munio from the late 13th century and the formal penitent rule of the early 15th century, which show how penitents were to organize and live their lives.

The second section is dedicated to hagiographic sources.

The third section is made up of penitent women's religious writing. The texts translated here present an overview of Dominican women's literary production that complements the writings of Catherine of Siena, already available in English.

While Dominican penitent women held an important position in medieval piety, aside from Catherine of Siena, their spirituality has not attracted much scholarly attention. As the first comprehensive introduction to medieval Dominican laywomen and Dominican penitent spirituality in English, this book makes a significant scholarly and spiritual contribution..

The Penitents' Treasury: Indulgences in Latin Christendom, 1175 - 1375

The granting of indulgences by the Catholic Church has long been infamous as one of the grounds for Martin Luther’s revolt from Christianity in the sixteenth century. Modern scholars have usually characterized the medieval practice as a defective one. In The Penitents’ Treasury, historian Robert W. Shaffern debunks this argument through a reexamination of indulgences that shows how their alleged evils have been exaggerated throughout history. This provocative volume, a necessary read for anyone interested in medieval history and the history of religion, calls for much rethinking about the state of the church on the eve of the Reformation.
