Scribbling the Cat: Travels with an African Soldier
With the same disarmingly unguarded prose that won her critical acclaim for Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, Alexandra Fuller tells of her unusual friendship with “K”—a white African and veteran of the brutal, racially divided Rhodesian War. An engrossing and haunting tale of love, godliness, hate, war, and survival, Scribbling the Cat recounts the journey she makes with K into the lands that hold the scars of their war, from Zambia through Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) and into Mozambique. Driven by memories, they venture deeper into the countries’ remote bush, where they encounter other veterans and survivors and confront the demons of K’s past: a violent war marked by racial strife, jungle battles, torture, and the murdering of innocent civilians..

Scribbling in the Sand: Christ and Creativity
"To this day we have not the slightest idea what it was Jesus twice scribbled in the sand. By and large the commentaries have asked the wrong question through the ages. They labor over the content, over what he might have written They ask what, without ever realizing the real question is why? It was not the content that mattered but why he did it. Unexpected. Irritating. Creative."

Singer, songwriter and diligent student of Scripture, Michael Card is well known for the depth of his lyrics and the artistry of his music. But far more significant than the songs he has penned is the source of his inspiration--the creativity embodied in Jesus Christ, the incarnate Word of God.

In his book Scribbling in the Sand Card explores the biblical foundations of true Christian creativity. Whether we think of ourselves as creative or not, all of us are created in the image of our Creator God, and thus creativity is a vital expression of our discipleship.

This companion study guide provides eight studies to help individuals and groups interact with the themes of Michael Card's book. With discussion questions, inductive Bible studies and creative exercises, each study provides opportunities for reflection, discovery and application. The user-friendly format makes this study guide ideal for small groups, Sunday school classes or anyone who wants to enter into a life of Christian creativity..

Scribbling Women: Short Stories by 19th-Century American Women
A new mother longing to write is judged "hysterical" and confined to her bedroom where she slowly loses herself in horrific fantasy. A young girl stirred by two beings--a handsome young man and an ethereal white heron--is forced to make a choice between them. A love affair quashed by convention ignites during a sudden storm. These tales of remarkable and ordinary lives in nineteenth-century America are told throughout women's voices that call out from the kitchen hearth, the solitary room, the prison cell. Stories by Louisa May Alcott, Willa Cather, Kate Chopin, and Edith Wharton, as well as by others less familiar, reveal a universe of emotions hidden beneath parochial scenes. American writers claimed the short story as their national genre in the nineteenth century, and women writers made it the most important outlet for their particular experiences. A unique selection, with an introduction, notes, selected criticism, and a chrolonology of the authors' lives and times..

Jinn from Hyperspace: And Other Scribblings--Both Serious and Whimsical
For over fifty years Martin Gardner has been delighting readers with elegant, witty, and highly intelligent writing on an amazing array of topics. Best known for his works on popular science and mathematics, and as an incisive skeptical commentator on the paranormal, Gardner is also an accomplished writer of children's literature, a novelist, and a prolific essayist on religion, philosophy, and other issues. This new collection of Gardner gems takes its name from an essay on a mathematical theme, about a jinn (or genie) trapped in a "Klein Bottle"--an amusing tale that also teaches the math phobic something interesting about a theoretical one-sided object with no distinction between inside and outside. Other topics in math and physics include speculations about universes where time runs in reverse; the Banach-Tarski paradox (whereby a sphere, after being deconstructed, can be reassembled at twice its size); and a vigorous defense of the objective reality of mathematical theorems independent of human culture. On the literary side, Gardner discusses two neglected works by G.K. Chesterton, one of which concerns an imaginary but now very topical war between Islam and Christianity. He also considers the fantasies of L. Frank Baum that don't take place in Oz, Clement Moore's ever-popular The Night Before Christmas, and the many fascinating books by Lewis Carroll that are sometimes overshadowed by his famous Alice in Wonderland. A treat for longtime Gardner readers or the perfect introduction for newcomers, The Jinn from Hyperspace offers a rich selection of stimulating intellectual wonders..

Scribblings
Jay McNamara’s wit and insight are familiar to readers of Vero Life Magazine, where his column regularly appears. These funny essays are just the anecdote to the aggravations we all face each day. Every doctor’s office, airline waiting room and handbag should contain a copy of this laugh out loud book, which contains mostly heretofore unpublished material. Short and to the point, McNamara gets to the amusing aspects of life’s annoyances.

He writes from a perspective encompassing his myriad occupational and lifetime pursuits, including ad exec, mayor, Marine officer and, importantly, grandfather. Mostly, he brings a timeless Irish sense of humor to everyday events. If he had lived two hundred years ago, he would have been one of those Irish itinerant story tellers who traveled from town to town.

Only in two essays does McNamara turn serious, in one describing his top secret access to military planning prior to Viet Vietnam, and in another describing the saga of his prostate cancer treatment, a story of perseverance and hope for anyone so afflicted. Mostly, though, he is in it for the laughs. If laughter is a medicine, these essays provide strong doses. Just what the doctor ordered for what ails you.
