New History of Jazz
Praise for the first edition of A New History of Jazz:“The most outstanding single-volume history of jazz around.”Don Rose, Jazz Institute of Chicago “No jazz writer, scholar, teacher, musician, or fan should be without it on his or her desk. Yes, it really is that good.”W. Royal Stokes, Jazz Notes “Shipton has taken on the big on here and come up trumps…More trustworthy and less sentimental than many similar efforts…it achieves something approaching an essential text.” Mojo All the great names in jazz history are here, from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis and from Sidney Bechet to Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. But unlike those historians who call a halt with the death of Coltrane in 1967, Shipton continues the story with the major trends in jazz over the last 40 years: free jazz, jazz rock, world music influences, and the re-emergence of the popular jazz singer.

The Pig Who Saved the World
The fate of the ancient Greek world is again in the hooves of a talking pig in this snortingly funny — and slyly informative — sequel to THE PIG SCROLLS

After saving the Cosmos (and telling anyone who will listen all about it), Gryllus the Pig has decided it’s time to return to his human form. If only he could find Circe to reverse her curse! Along with friends Sibyl, the ex-priestess, and Homer, the teenage epic poet, Gryllus sets off on the high seas. But soon it’s clear that Gryllus’s transformation will have to wait — at least until he frees some captive gods and maybe even saves the world — again. Ripe with porcine-infused mythology and a sarcastic first-person — er — first-pig narrator, THE PIG WHO SAVED THE WORLD continues the heroic tale of Gryllus with prodigious spirit and oversize hilarity..

Nanda Devi: Exploration and Ascent
The wide-ranging expedition of Eric Shipton and H.W. Tilman in the Garhwal Himalaya in 1934 is regarded as the epitome of adventurous mountaineering. With their Sherpa companions they solved the problem of access to the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, crossed difficult cols, made first ascents, and explored remote, uninhabited valleys. These adventures are recounted in Shipton's wonderfully vivid Nanda Devi, one of the most inspirational mountain-travel books ever written.

Once access to Nanda Devi was found, it was only a matter of time before a first ascent attempt was mounted. In 1936 Tilman joined an American and British expedition and tells the tale of their successful climb in his restrained, witty account, The Ascent of Nanda Devi.

This compilation of these classic tales is concluded with further accounts by Shipton of his subsequent surveying expeditions in and around the Sanctuary, which served to mitigate his regret in missing the ascent of Nanda Devi (he was on Everest at the time.) Together, the writings of these two mountaineering legends creates a fascinating adventure tale..
