The Getty Villa (Getty Trust Publications: J. Paul Getty Museum)
The original Getty Museum, housed in a replica of a Roman Villa on a site overlooking the Pacific Ocean, is one of Los Angeles's most treasured landmarks. Closed for almost ten years while renovations were made to the building and the site itself was transformed into a center for the study of antiquities and conservation, the Getty Villa is now set to open late in 2005. The Getty Villa is a lively history of the Getty Museum, its renowned antiquities collections, and its growth from a small museum in a ranch house in Malibu to its first home in a building designed to replicate what we know of the Villa dei Papiri, an ancient Roman villa partially uncovered in Herculaneum. Most engagingly, this book records the ten-year adventure in reconfiguring a beautiful, but topographically challenging, site into one that could continue to accommodate the splendid Museum building and also provide for an outdoor theater, laboratories for conservation work and research, offices for staff and visiting scholars, and an education program for adults and children. This is a story of architectural imagination, geographical challenges, and legal hurdles, all of which have resulted in a truly unique and beautiful site. The story is an enlightening and rewarding one for anyone interested in architecture and in the difficulties posed by building on a grand scale in the twenty-first century. Beautifully illustrated throughout, the book includes 250 reproductions of works of art, photographs of both the old and the new Getty Museum, site plans, and architectural elevations..

Unprecedented Realism: The Architecture of Machado and Silvetti
For almost two decades the work of Rodolfo Machado and Jorge Silvetti has remained at the forefront of theoretical production. Their rigorously?detailed and exquisitely drawn projects characterize an attitude of?aesthetic realism towards materials, construction, function, and the?cultural role of architecture. Yet the conditions they address, and the?effects they produce, are unprecedented. Their projects synthesize?seemingly incompatible images, uses, and typologies.? ?Unprecedented Realism is not an illustration of theory. Rather,?what emerges is a constructive theory of architecture that understands the process of design itself as a distinct mode of knowledge --?as theoretical research that is still irreducibly architectural.? ?Unprecedented Realism presents both buildings and urban?infrastructures: Steps of Providence, RI; Entrance for Cranbrook,?Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; Carnegie-Mellon University Center, Pittsburgh;?Pershing Square, Los Angeles; and Times Square, New York City.? ?Along with the analytic text of K. Michael Hays, the volume includes?critical essays by Alan Colquhoun, George Baird, Farès el-Dahdah,?and Rodolphe el-Khoury (please see the Table of Contents)..

Enrique Norten: A House in the City (Graduate School of Design Eliot Noyes Series)
From an interview with Enrique Norten by Brigitte Shim: Shim: Throughout modern architecture, the house has been a laboratory for invention It has been a testing ground for architects to explore new ideas using the ordinary program of kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, living space. How is this house used to push your architecture? Norten: What I was looking for with this house was probably a return to the main principles of modernism. I was trying to look for the very basics of architecture: a simple structure, simple construction methods, and straightforward spatial conditions that would satisfy the needs of our family. The house was a laboratory where I was looking back to where the tradition of modernity started, and I tried to recapture that. .

A Risk Severity Index for industrial plants and sites [An article from: Journal of Hazardous Materials]
This digital document is a journal article from Journal of Hazardous Materials, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser. Description: A risk index (Risk Severity Index, S) has been devised to allow the assessment of the risk level originated by a given installation or site over the affected zone. A set of threshold levels for thermal radiation, toxic concentration and overpressure, together with the probabilities and frequencies associated to critical events and their effects have been the basis for calculating the values of S. A computer tool has been designed to perform a quick calculation of the diverse Risk Severity Indexes (for a critical event, for a dangerous phenomenon, for a type of effect and for the whole installation) and to plot a map of the risk severity levels around the site. The methodology has been applied to diverse test cases and it has proved to be useful for risk assessment, for comparative studies and for land use planning. .
