Beyond The Palace
Asbury Park, one of America's best-known rock and roll music scenes, finally has its story told in the new book "Beyond the Palace" by Gary Wien. The struggling city along the Jersey Shore has long been known as the place where artists like Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi got started but its legacy goes much further. "Beyond the Palace" takes you on a ride through the city's long and illustrious music history; from the Upstage Club where musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Billy Chinnock, David Sancious and Southside Johnny used to jam all night to early clubs like The Student Prince and Sunshine In; from the legendary Stone Pony and Fastlane to alternative clubs like the Green Parrot, T-Birds Cafe and The Saint. The book contains interviews with over 40 artists and features over 70 rare and never before seen photographs, many from the world-famous photographer Debra L. Rothenberg. "This is really the first comprehensive look at the entire Asbury Park music scene," said the author. "There are a lot of books out there that focus solely on Bruce Springsteen or Bon Jovi, but 'Beyond the Palace' also features the artists that had good careers but didn't sell millions of records. It covers local rock and roll history from the 60s to today, including a look at artists like Matt Witte, Danny White and DeSol that prove the Asbury Park music scene is alive and well." "Beyond the Palace" takes you inside the scene like never before. You'll hear the stories right from the artists themselves. It?s a look at drugs, sex and booze; bands that made it big, artists on the rise, and those that just missed the mark. It brings you inside the music industry from how bands fight to get signed to how things can fall apart overnight. But most of all, it shows how artists don?t have to sell millions of records to be remembered. Asbury Park, currently in the early stages of a rebirth, truly deserves its place in music history. As the city changes, this book will become even more of a collector's item. Asbury is banking on its past to build its future. For those who were there, "Beyond the Palace" will bring the memories flooding back and for those who missed out here's a chance to learn about a small city with a musical past unlike any other..

We Skate Hardcore: Photographs from Brooklyn's Southside
View Photos. Published by New York University Press and Lyndhurst Books of the Center for Documentary Studies. The stunning photographs of We Skate Hardcore reveal the determination, the dreams, and the rough and tumble story of urban Latino youth coming of age in New York City. Vincent Cianni spent eight years photographing and documenting a group of Latino in-line skaters in the Southside of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Cianni weaves together images of the skaters with their own words, showing the skaters' struggles to find a place to skate and build skate parks, and just to survive in the city. In the evacuated industrial spaces of their neighborhood, the skaters carve out places for enjoying their sport and showing off their skills—often thwarting established rules and authority figures in the process. Their stories are both personal and resonant; they reflect the trials and tenacity of a young urban culture, as well as life in Southside's Latino community. In addition to black and white and color photos, We Skate Hardcore includes a DVD with footage of the skaters featured in the book, as well as additional photographs and an essay. We Skate Hardcore, with its verve and youthful energy, will especially appeal to photographers, those interested in urban studies and adolescence, New Yorkers, and in-line skaters and extreme sports enthusiasts everywhere. .

The Atlantic and Danville Railway Company: the Railroad of Southside Virginia
Out of print since 1987, William E. Griffin, Jr. has updated and expanded his popular history of this colorful Virginia shortline railroad with a new layout and extensive new photographic coverage. Here is the complete history of the railroad that was originally built with a large investment of British capital to transport cotton from the farms of Southside Virginia to the port of Norfolk. It operated a steam powered narrow gauge branch line and Southern Railway steam locomotives during its 50-year lease to that road, then favored Alco diesels during its period of independent operation and subsequent operation by the Norfolk and Western Railway as the Norfolk, Franklin and Danville Railroad. The book has also been updated to cover the history of the railroad since the creation of the Norfolk Southern Corporation and provides a new color section that will be of interest to modelers and historians. Extended photo captions also provide details on the railroad's locomotives, Norfolk naval operations, stations and rolling stock. In addition to fans of the A&D, the book will be of interest to fans of the Southern Railway, Norfolk and Western Railroad, Norfolk Southern Corporation, shortlines and narrow gauge railroads. .

In the Absence of Towns: Settlement and Country Trade in Southside Virginia, 1730-1800
During the period from 1730 to 1800, not one town was developed in Southside Virginia, despite tremendous economic development and population growth. Charles Farmer asserts that the characteristics of the tobacco production and trade and the use of slave labor were the primary reasons for the lack of development in the region. In this text, Farmer examines these issues as well as the importance and persistence of country store trade..
