The Hundred Dresses
Wanda Petronski lives way up in shabby Boggins Heights, and she doesn't have any friends Every day she wears a faded blue dress, which wouldn't be too much of a problem if she didn't tell her schoolmates that she had a hundred dresses at home--all silk, all colors, and velvet, too. This lie--albeit understandable in light of her dress-obsessed circle--precipitates peals of laughter from her peers, and she never hears the end of it. One day, after Wanda has been absent from school for a few days, the teacher receives a note from Wanda's father, a Polish immigrant: "Dear teacher: My Wanda will not come to your school any more. Jake also. Now we move away to big city. No more holler Polack. No more ask why funny name. Plenty of funny names in the big city. Yours truly, Jan Petronski." Maddie, a girl who had stood by while Wanda was taunted about her dresses, feels sick inside: "True, she had not enjoyed listening to Peggy ask Wanda how many dresses she had in her closet, but she had said nothing.... She was a coward.... She had helped to make someone so unhappy that she had had to move away from town." Repentant, Maddie and her friend Peggy head up to Boggins Heights to see if the Petronskis are still there. When they discover the house is empty, Maddie despairs: "Nothing would ever seem good to her again, because just when she was about to enjoy something--like going for a hike with Peggy to look for bayberries or sliding down Barley Hill--she'd bump right smack into the thought that she had made Wanda Petronski move away." Ouch. This gentle Newbery Honor Book convincingly captures the deeply felt moral dilemmas of childhood, equally poignant for the teased or the tormentor. Louis Slobodkin, illustrator of the 1944 Caldecott Medalist Many Moons, brings his wispy, evocative, color-washed sketches to Eleanor Estes's time-proven classic about kindness, compassion, and standing up for what's right. (Ages 6 and older) --Karin Snelson.

One Hundred Hungry Ants
Horn Book : A rhyming text describes the progress of one hundred ants marching toward a picnic. To travel faster, one ant suggests dividing into two lines of fifty, then four lines of twenty-five, and finally ten lines of ten. Their frantic reorganization takes so long that the picnic is gone by the time they arrive. The illustrations, which look like linoleum cuts, use a pleasing palette and energetic lines to depict ants with highly individual characters. Publishers Weekly : "A first-time author and illustrator are off to an impressive start in this spirited story . . . The unexpected pairing of sophisticated art and light-hearted text lends this book particular distinction.".

An Invitation to Health (with CengageNOW and InfoTrac 1-Semester Printed Access Card)
AN INVITATION TO HEALTH, Twelfth Edition has been a best-selling personal health text for many years, largely due to its ability both to introduce the topics of health and wellness and also to inspire students to put the facts of what makes good health and wellness into practice. The unique approach of Dianne Hales's text revolves around the student focus (i.e. examples students can relate to, contemporary coverage, visual appeal, testing preparation). This text is comprehensive in its coverage and includes the latest research and data on topics students care about, from personal relationships, to eating habits and understanding health risks. Because changing for life is a major theme of this edition, a new "Your Life Coach" section presents practical information on how to make healthful changes. To enhance the critical thinking aspect, case studies have been added in each chapter that will present a personal issue involving making a healthy choice. Also, "You Decide" boxes in each chapter ask a controversial question for student reflection, such as same-sex marriage and legalization of marijuana. They are also linked to Personal Response System "clicker" content and a new online journal. Additionally, with this updated Twelfth Edition, there is the new HealthNow Online assessment and learning tool, including pre- and post-tests, a personalized behavior change plan, and activities to add enjoyment to learning and allow students to explore, experience, and better understand the benefits of healthy living. We also now offer Pedometers, over 500 PowerPoint® slides, new ABC® video clips, and much more. Why a Daughter Needs a Dad: A Hundred Reasons
The relationship between father and daughter is one that almost defies description Begun and nurtured in love, the relationship strengthens daughter and dad and brings out the best in both, softening the edges of fathers and providing strength and security for their daughters. The warmth of quietand exhuberanthugs and laughter, the comfort of familiarity, the creation of a history from which both dad and daughter may drawall this and much more express the rich relationship that exists between fathers and daughters. Why a Daughter Needs a Dad is one father's loving reflection upon what he bringsor hopes to bringto his daughter's life. When I sat down to write, Gregory E. Lang observes, I wanted to express the essence of what I think is unique about the relationship my daughter and I share. He began to think of the things they had done together and how important their moments together have been. He thought of what sort of wisdom he could impart by virtue of a strong relationship, how their years together could provide a bond that would guide her as she grew into womanhood. The first time I read what I had written, he writes, I saw a list of what a daughter might ask her father to do for her. The second time I read it I saw a list of all that I hope to do for my daugher. The result is a book that will inspire fathers to embrace the important role they hold in their daughters' lives, to provide them with the love, nurture, and support they seek, and to enjoy the blessings that are reciprocated in kind. FAMILY; GIFT ILLUSTRATED; PHOTOGRAPHS 7 X 8, 128 PAGES HARDCOVER (CASESIDE).

Vagabond (The Grail Quest #2)
Vagabond, the second entry in Bernard Cornwell's Grail Quest series, has been eagerly anticipated by those who read the first book, and it doesn't disappoint. Thomas has managed to survive the battle of Crécy. Still nursing his wounds, he is dispatched by the king on a mission to look into the matter of his father's inheritance, which is obscurely connected to the Holy Grail. This most precious relic of the Christian faith is a much sought-after object, offering the power of total victory in war to its owner. But Thomas finds himself in the middle of a battle against an army invading the North of England, and other shadowy forces pursuing the grail are prepared to slaughter anyone who stands in their way. In the ruins of his birthplace, Thomas discovers more about his father, and a dangerous voyage to France brings him up against his cousin and arch-enemy, Count of Astarc Guy Vexville. The stage is set for a merciless showdown. Thomas is a protagonist drawn quite as pithily as his much-loved predecessor, and the sheer verve of Cornwell's storytelling here is irresistible. We are plunged into a distant age: bloody, colourful and dangerous. Roll on, volume three! --Barry Forshaw, Amazon.co.uk.
