An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar
In An American Index of the Hidden and Unfamiliar, Taryn Simon documents spaces that are integral to America's foundation, mythology and daily functioning, but remain inaccessible or unknown to a public audience. She has photographed rarely seen sites from domains including: science, government, medicine, entertainment, nature security and religion. This index examines subjects that, while provocative or controversial, are currently legal. The work responds to a desire to discover unknown territories, to see everything. Simon makes use of the annotated-photograph's capacity to engage and inform the public. Transforming that which is off-limits or under-the-radar into a visible and intelligible form, she confronts the divide between the privileged access of the few and the limited access of the public. Photographed with a large format view camera (except when prohibited), Simon's 70 color plates form a seductive collection that reflects and reveals a national identity. In addition to this monograph, there is also an exhibition of Simon's work opening at the Whitney Museum of American Art in March 2007..

The Abounding River Personal Logbook: An Unfamiliar View of Being Abundance
The Abounding River Workbook is a training manual to experience a life of being provided for. Consider that scarcity (not enough love, money, time, beauty, etc.) is an inherited way being—a view of life that we practice and fuel by widespread agreement. This book is the antidote for our obsession with scarcity. Abundance, like love or joy, is a presence that we can evoke by our conscious attention to it—to what we have already been given.

In this book, you practice being someone who:
1. Loves your life
2. Adores yourself
3. Accepts the world

Democracy in Translation: Understanding Politics in an Unfamiliar Culture (Wilder House Series in Politics, History, and Culture)
Frederic C. Schaffer challenges the assumption often made by American scholars that democracy has been achieved in foreign countries when criteria such as free elections are met. Elections, he argues, often have cultural underpinnings that are invisible to outsiders. To examine grassroots understandings of democratic institutions and political concepts, Schaffer conducted fieldwork in Senegal, a mostly Islamic and agrarian country with a long history of electoral politics. Schaffer discovered that ideas of "demokaraasi" held by Wolof-speakers often reflect concerns about collective security. Many Senegalese see voting as less a matter of choosing leaders than of reinforcing community ties that may be called upon in times of crisis.

By looking carefully at language, Schaffer demonstrates that institutional arrangements do not necessarily carry the same meaning in different cultural contexts. Democracy in Translation asks how social scientists should investigate the functioning of democratic institutions in cultures dissimilar from their own, and raises larger issues about the nature of democracy, the universality of democratic ideals, and the practice of cross-cultural research..

The Familiar and the Unfamiliar in Twentieth-Century Architecture
This ambitious study uses the concept of the familiar and the avant-garde practice of defamiliarization to reexamine some of the most important buildings of the twentieth century. The Familiar and the Unfamiliar in Twentieth-Century Architecture examines the work--written and built--of four seminal twentieth-century architects and firms: Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Aldo Rossi, and the partnership of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. In approaching the history of twentieth-century Western architecture from the perspective of the architectural subject--the person architects imagine experiencing their work--Jean La Marche reveals new insights into the ways humans are imagined in relation to architecture.
