Naked Economics: Undressing the Dismal Science
Finally! A book about economics that won't put you to sleep. In fact, you won't be able to put this one down.

Naked Economics makes up for all of those Econ 101 lectures you slept through (or avoided) in college, demystifying key concepts, laying bare the truths behind the numbers, and answering those questions you have always been too embarrassed to ask. For all the discussion of Alan Greenspan in the media, does anyone know what the Fed actually does? And what about those blackouts in California? Were they a conspiracy on the part of the power companies? Economics is life. There's no way to understand the important issues without it. Now, with Charles Wheelan's breezy tour, there's no reason to fear this highly relevant subject. With the commonsensical examples and brilliantly acerbic commentary we've come to associate with The Economist, Wheelan brings economics to life. Amazingly, he does so with nary a chart, graph, or mathematical equation in sight—certainly a feat to be witnessed firsthand.

Economics is a crucial subject. There's no way to understand the important issues without it. Now, with Charles Wheelan's breezy tour, there's also no reason to fear it..

Mr. Adams's Last Crusade: John Quincy Adams's Extraordinary Post-Presidential Life in Congress
Following his single term as President of the United States (1825–1829), John Quincy Adams, embittered by his loss to Andrew Jackson, boycotted his successor's inauguration, just as his father John Adams had done (the only two presidents ever to do so). Rather than retire, the sixty-two-year-old former president, U.S. senator, secretary of state, and Harvard professor was elected by his Massachusetts friends and neighbors to the House of Representatives to throw off the "incubus of Jacksonianism." It was the opening chapter in what was arguably the most remarkable post-presidency in American history.

In this engaging biography, historian Joseph Wheelan describes Adams's battles against the House Gag Rule that banished abolition petitions; the removal of Eastern Indian tribes; and the annexation of slave-holding Texas, while recounting his efforts to establish the Smithsonian Institution. As a "man of the whole country," Adams was not bound by political party, yet was reelected to the House eight times before collapsing at his "post of duty" on February 21, 1848, and then dying in the House Speaker's office. His funeral evoked the greatest public outpouring since Benjamin Franklin's death.

Mr. Adams's Last Crusade will enlighten and delight anyone interested in American history.

Jefferson's War: America's First War on Terror 1801-1805
Author Joseph Wheelan has marvelously captured the story of America’s war against the Barbary pirates, our first war against terror and the nations that support it. The Barbary pirates, a Muslim enemy from Tripoli, attacked European and American merchant shipping with impunity. Jefferson ordered the U.S. Navy to Tripoli in 1801 to repel "force with force." The Barbary War was also a proving ground for such young officers as William Bainbridge, Stephen Decatur, Isaac Hull, and David Porter –key players in the impending War of 1812 against Great Britain.

Invading Mexico: America's Continental Dream and the Mexican War, 1846-1848
Popular historian Joseph Wheelan recounts James Polk’s strategy of last resort for prying California away from Mexico. He had tried to buy it; he had instructed his agents to encourage a settlers’ revolt. When these measures failed, the impatient president, while cynically condemning Mexico’s anger over America’s annexation of Texas, sent General Zachary Taylor’s army to the Rio Grande River, into territory that Mexico claimed as hers. By provocatively sending Taylor there, the president got his war — and, as bitter corollaries, the scathing criticism of congressional leaders on moral grounds, and Mexico’s lasting distrust of its powerful northern neighbor.

The Mexican War was America’s first truly modern war. Steamships ferried troops, daguerreotypes captured the spectacle of infantry and cavalry marching off to battle, newspapermen reported from the front lines for the first time, and telegraphs helped speed news of victories to eager readers back home. For the first time, large numbers of the regular Army’s field-grade officers were West Point-trained. Weapons technology advances such as the mobile field artillery, the Colt six-shooter and the Sharp’s Rifle gave the U.S. Army daunting firepower. These advantages ensured victory even when Mexican troops outnumbered Americans by as much as 4-to-1.

Faculty Groups: From Frustration to Collaboration

"This is an astounding handbook for educators What we've needed is exactly what this book provides "
-Jan Kesseling, Superintendent
Madison Loral School District, Middletown, OH

Develop high-performance teams and improve student learning and achievement!

Traditionally, the culture of teaching has been one of isolation, yet today’s educators are being asked to make fundamental changes in the way they interact with their colleagues by participating in various school teams-grade level teams, vertical teams, school leadership teams, study groups, and school improvement teams, to name a few. While great in theory, the concept is often difficult in practice. Faculty Groups translates what social scientists have learned about work groups into straightforward, commonsense, practical guidelines for educators.

Believing in the efficacy of faculty teamwork, author Susan A. Wheelan provides a road map for teachers to learn how to collaborate with each other, reduce frustration, and make a significant difference in student learning and performance. By developing high performance faculty and administrative teams, educators can generate a cooperative and collegial culture, resulting in a learning environment that is second to none.

To successfully develop collaborative faculty groups, points of discussion include:

  • How groups develop, and why some groups succeed, while others fail
  • What faculty members and leaders can do to help their groups become productive
  • How to design, facilitate, and participate in effective meetings
  • How multiple groups working in the same school can work together to create a collaborative school culture
  • How detailed surveys, assessments, instruments, and teambuilding activities for team members can measure their skills and target areas for improvement

Educators agree: no goal is more important than educating the next generation. Everyone involved helps to create the school’s culture and establish effective and productive work groups. Written for principals, teacher leaders, and teachers on teams, this book can also be used by other educational groups such as school boards and site-based leadership councils.

Jefferson's Vendetta: The Pursuit of Aaron Burr and the Judiciary
Generations of Americans have known Thomas Jefferson as one of our unambiguously great presidents, a man of honor and optimism unencumbered by pettiness and spite; and so they have known Aaron Burr, his greatest adversary, as a traitorous would-be destroyer of that distinguished legacy. In Jefferson’s Vendetta, Joseph Wheelan examines one of the eminent political rivalries in our history, set against the backdrop of postcolonial Virginia, and discovers a truth vastly different from what is taught in high schools and universities. Here is Burr, the flawed but gifted politician who made powerful enemies because his charm and skill rivaled Jefferson’s own, and who trusted the fairness of American democracy too deeply to rebut the wild criticisms aimed at him by slanderers in the U.S. government. And here, in vivid detail, is Jefferson, whose obsessive crusade to destroy Burr was undone by one mammoth but historically overlooked miscalculation. Exquisitely researched and brilliantly written, Jefferson’s Vendetta challenges the blackened legacy of Aaron Burr and shows the beloved President Jefferson mired in the kind of hateful and manipulative politics that tradition has depicted him as rising above.
