Photodiode Amplifiers: OP AMP Solutions
Light photons impinging upon a semiconductor material in the vicinity of a P-N junction release conduction carriers to produce current flow through the photodiode effect. Photodiode amplifiers convert this current to a voltage in a relationship that remains linear as long as the amplifier eliminates signal voltage swing from the photodiode. For this purpose, the simple current-to-voltage converter or transimpedance amplifier presents a virtual ground to the diode. However, when connected to a photodiode, this simple op amp circuit displays surprising multidimensional constraints that defy conventional op amp intuition..

Wideband Amplifiers

There are many books discussing electronic circuit design which include a chapter or two dedicated to wideband and high-speed circuits and instrumentation. In most of those books the way of achieving a high bandwidth relies almost exclusively on the selection of semiconductor devices fast enough to do the job. Only a few of them go deep enough into specific details useful for starting the high-speed circuit design from scratch; fewer still dedicate enough space to identify the causes for bandwidth limitation, let alone the remedies and solutions possible with careful and systematic consideration of active and passive component interactions and specific circuit topology selections.

There are also many books discussing circuit analysis, modeling and performance optimization strategies; almost none, however, offers also the complete introduction to mathematical procedures required for a successful design, particularly if time-domain or transient performance is of prime importance.

Wideband Amplifiers attempts to cover both of these requirements, starting from the basics of mathematical procedures and circuit analysis but also offering the more advanced topics of system optimization and synthesis, along with the complete mathematical apparatus required. We have tried to show the circuit examples in such a way that the main principles for achieving high bandwidth are clearly exposed, independently of the actual device technology used in the circuit realization. At the same time we were striving not to loose sight of the everyday needs of a circuit design engineer, so we have intentionally limited the contents of mathematics to the necessary minimum. While some of the derivations require a degree of previous mathematical knowledge, we have taken care to include the trivial steps in order to help a less experienced reader to follow the subject easily. For those who want answers more immediately, the computer routines on the accompaining CD will be of help.

In this way we hope that Wideband Amplifiers will have a more lasting value, both as a learning guide and as a reference design manual.

Introduction to Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA)
Introduction to WCDMA explains the fundamental components, basic operation, services, and terminology used for UMTS code division multiple access (CDMA) systems

This book explains the basic components, technologies used, and operation of UMTS WCDMA systems. You will discover why mobile telephone service providers have upgraded from 2nd generation digital systems to more efficient and feature rich 3rd generation system. You will also discover how 3rd generation systems are gradually evolving into 4th generation ultra broadband multimedia systems.

This book starts with the system components and basic services that the WCDMA system can provide. You will learn that the key types of WCDMA devices include external radio modems, wireless PCMCIA cards, embedded radio modules, single mode and dual mode mobile telephones. You will then discover the different types of available services such as multiple types of voice services, data services, messaging services, and position location services.

Explained are the physical and logical radio channel structures of the WCDMA systems along with the basic frame and slot structures. Described are the fundamental capabilities and operation of the WCDMA radio channel including channel coding, modulation types, adaptive multi-rate speech coding, precise power control, and soft handoff. You will learn how each WCDMA radio channel has channel codes and that some are these are used for signaling (control channels) and others are used for user traffic (voice and data). Because the needs of voice and data communication are different, you will discover that the WCDMA system essentially separates circuit switched (primarily voice) and packet switched (primarily data) services.

Described are key functional sections of a WCDMA network components and how they communicate with each other. You will learn how and why WCDMA is evolving into 4th generation ultra broadband systems using spatial division multiple access (SDMA) technology. Some of the most important topics featured in this book are:

• How WCDMA systems operate
• WCDMA voice, data, and multimedia services
• The types of WCDMA products and their uses
• The WCDMA radio channel structure
• The different types of physical and logical channels
• WCDMA network components
• Speech coding, power control, and soft handoff
• Network components and their connections
• How WCDMA technology is evolving into ultra broadband multi-media systems.

UWB Communication Systems: A Comprehensive Overview (EURASIP Book Series on Signal Processing and Communications) (Eurasip Signal Processing and Communications)
Ultrawideband (UWB) communication systems offer an unprecedented opportunity to impact the future communication world. The enormous available bandwidth, the wide scope of the data rate / range trade-off, as well as the potential for very low-cost operation leading to pervasive usage, all present a unique opportunity for UWB systems to impact the way people and intelligent machines communicate and interact with their environment. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of the state of the art of UWB systems from theory to applications. Due to the rapid progress of multidisciplinary UWB research, such an overview can only be achieved by combining the areas of expertise of several scientists in the field. More than 30 leading UWB researchers and practitioners have contributed to this book covering the major topics relevant to UWB. These topics include UWB signal processing, UWB channel measurement and modeling, higher-layer protocol issues, spatial aspects of UWB signaling, UWB regulation and standardization, implementation issues, and UWB applications as well as positioning. The book is targeted at advanced academic researchers, wireless designers, and graduate students wishing to greatly enhance their knowledge of all aspects of UWB systems..

Wideband Circuit Design (Electronic Engineering Systems Series)
Wideband Circuit Design starts at a foundational level and proceeds at a carefully gauged pace to advanced topics, providing a self-sufficient text for specialization in wideband analog circuit design for the fields of telecommunications and related areas. Basic theory and comprehensive circuit analysis methods (oriented for application to general network computer programs) are detailed and then extended to applicational topics such as filters, delay structures, equalizers, matching networks, broadband amplifiers, and microwave components. Novel and simplified approaches to such fundamental topics as linear circuit time domain response, synthesis of cascaded networks, and the construction of Chebychev and elliptic transfer functions are given. For the first time in book form a unified presentation of analytic matching and gain-bandwidth theory, integrated with the numerical Real Frequency design technique (originally published by the authors), is delineated. Wideband Circuit Design presents all the concepts, techniques, and procedures you need to gain the broad understanding necessary for finding creative solutions to wideband circuit design problems..

Ultra-wideband Radar Technology
In 1995, James D. Taylor's Introduction to Ultra-Wideband Radar Systems introduced engineers to the theory behind a promising new concept for remote sensing. Since then, the field has undergone enormous growth with new applications realized and more applications conceptualized at a remarkable pace. However, understanding ultra-wideband (UWB) radar requires a new philosophical approach. Concepts such as radar cross section will have new meanings as range resolution becomes smaller than the target. Ultra-Wideband Radar Technology is a guide to the future of radar by an international team of experts. They present the problems, solutions, and examples of UWB radar remote sensing. Chapters discuss the theory and ideas for future systems development, and show the potential capabilities. The writers present concepts such as the differences between UWB and conventional radars, improving over-resolved target detection, receivers and waveforms, micropower systems, high power switching, and bistatic radar polarimetry. Finding comparable information elsewhere might require consulting hundreds of other books, technical journals, and symposium proceedings. Ultra-Wideband Radar Technology offers a unique opportunity to explore the theory, applications, and technology of UWB radar within a single source..
