History in the Making: An Absorbing Look at How American History Has Changed in the Telling Over the Last 200 Years
A fascinating reminder of how contemporary prejudices color the way each generation looks at the nation's past.In this "thought-provoking study" ( Library Journal), historian Kyle Wardthe widely acclaimed co-author of History Lessonsgives us another fascinating look at the biases inherent in the way we learn about our history. Juxtaposing passages from U.S. history textbooks from different eras, History in the Making provides us with intriguing new perspectives on familiar historical events and the ways in which they have been represented over time. The hardcover edition of History in the Making struck a chord among readers of popular history, and Ward was featured on NPR's popular series How the Understanding of U.S. History Changes. "Interesting and useful," according to Booklist, the book "convincingly illustrates how texts change as social and political attitudes evolve. With excerpts that span two hundred years, from Columbus's arrival to the Boston Massacre, from women's suffrage to Japanese internment, History in the Making exposes the stark contrasts between the lessons different generations have been taught about our past. "A good starting point for anyone interested in history and subjectivity" ( Kirkus), this immensely readable book is proof positive that your history is not your grandparent's history and won't be your children's history..

Absorbing Perfections: Kabbalah and Interpretation
In this wide-ranging discussion of Kabbalah-from the mystical trends of medieval Judaism to modern Hasidism-one of the world's foremost scholars considers different visions of the nature of the sacred text and of the methods to interpret it. Moshe Idel takes as a starting point the fact that the postbiblical Jewish world lost its geographical center with the destruction of the temple and so was left with a textual center, the Holy Book. Idel argues that a text-oriented religion produced language-centered forms of mysticism. Against this background, the author demonstrates how various Jewish mystics amplified the content of the Scriptures so as to include everything: the world, or God, for example. Thus the text becomes a major realm for contemplation, and the interpretation of the text frequently becomes an encounter with the deepest realms of reality. Idel delineates the particular hermeneutics belonging to Jewish mysticism, investigates the progressive filling of the text with secrets and hidden levels of meaning, and considers in detail the various interpretive strategies needed to decodify the arcane dimensions of the text..

Radar Absorbing Material Design
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled and assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A203814. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Low observable platforms have extremely low radar cross section specifications that cannot be achieved by shaping alone. The application of radar absorbing material is necessary, in which case the appropriate constitutive parameters and thickness must be selected. The universal design chart gives combinations of mu, epsilon and tau that provide zero specular reflection at normal incidence. Three different backing materials were used to generate the charts: (1) perfect electric conductor, (2) free space, and (3) graphite. One can pick the required values from the charts for an ideal zero reflection dielectric/magnetic layer. The extension to other materials is straightforward. Numerical simulations of coated plates were performed to estimate the effectiveness of the absorbing layers in reducing radar cross section. The reduction in monostatic radar cross section value is shown by plotting the radar cross section of the plate with and without radar absorbing material..

Computational Acoustics of Noise Propagation in Fluids - Finite and Boundary Element Methods
Among numerical methods applied in acoustics, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is normally favored for interior problems whereas the Boundary Element Method (BEM) is quite popular for exterior ones. That is why this valuable reference provides a complete survey of methods for computational acoustics, namely FEM and BEM. It demonstrates that both methods can be effectively used in the complementary cases. The chapters by well-known authors are evenly balanced: 10 chapters on FEM and 10 on BEM. An initial conceptual chapter describes the derivation of the wave equation and supplies a unified approach to FEM and BEM for the harmonic case. A categorization of the remaining chapters and a personal outlook complete this introduction. In what follows, both FEM and BEM are discussed in the context of very different problems. Firstly, this comprises numerical issues, e.g. convergence, multi-frequency solutions and highly efficient methods; and secondly, solutions techniques for the particular difficulties that arise with external problems, e.g. discussion of absorbing boundaries for FEM and treatment of the non-uniqueness problem for BEM. Finally, both parts on FEM and on BEM are completed by chapters on related problems, e.g. formulations for fluid-structure interaction. In addition to time-harmonic problems, transient problems are considered in some chapters. Many theoretical and industrial applications are presented. Overall, this book is a unified review of the state-of-the-art on FEM and BEM for computational acoustics. .
