From the supplier: Researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are advocating the use of silica aerogels in safety and protective devices to absorb kinetic energy. The energy of an object hitting a silica aerogel is absorbed by the collapse of the inorganic solid's structure and the release of the gas contained in it. A silica aerogel can decrease the maximum load produced during crushing to a significantly low level.
