Les croyances legitimant l'agression : un facteur de maintien des conduites agressives se developpant avec l'age ? [An article from: Neuropsychiatrie de l'enfance et de l'adolescence]
This digital document is a journal article from Neuropsychiatrie de l'enfance et de l'adolescence, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Goal of the study. - The study aimed to assess the relations between beliefs justifying aggression (aggression is useful, normal and justified by the victim's anterior behaviors) and aggressive behaviors, according to sex and age. Method. - The participants, recruited in summer camp, were divided in three-age bracket: 9-11, 12-14 and 15-17 years old (N =539, with 287 boys). They have filled out a questionnaire about beliefs justifying aggression and sociometric nominations, used to assess participants' acceptability. The counselors rated aggressive behaviors. Results. - As hypothesized, the results showed that the boys had a higher score on the beliefs scale, excepted during preadolescence where their levels were equal to these of the girls. The relation between the beliefs justifying aggression and aggressive behaviors appeared only at the entry of adolescence. Contrarily to what attempted, these beliefs were more strongly associated with aggressive behaviors for the girls. Conclusion. - The present results suggest that beliefs legitimizing aggression are an important factor to understand the exhibition of aggressive behaviors. The particularities found concerning age and sex underline the necessity to take into account these two factors. The results are discussed in the light of the particular socialization of boys and girls. .
