The Transformation of Agri-Food Systems: Globalization, Supply Chains and Smallholder Farmers
The driving forces of income growth, demographic shifts, globalization and technical change have led to a reorganization of food systems from farm to plate. The characteristics of supply chains—particularly the role of supermarkets—linking farmers have changed, from consumption and retail to wholesale, processing, procurement and production. This has had a dramatic effect on smallholder farmers, particularly in developing countries. This book presents a comprehensive framework for assessing the impacts of changing agri-food systems on smallholder farmers, recognizing the importance of heterogeneity between developing countries as well as within them. The book includes a number of case studies from Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe, which are used to illustrate differences in food systems’ characteristics and trends. The country case studies explore impacts on the small farm sector across different countries, local contexts, and farm types. .

Quantifying the Agri-Food Supply Chain (Wageningen UR Frontis Series)
Due to globalization and internationalization of agri-food production, the arena of competition and competitive advantage is moving from individual firms operating on spot markets towards supply chains and networks. Therefore, coordination between firms within the chain becomes more important. Topics like costs, efficiency, risk and investment analysis have received little empirical attention within chain and network research. Nonetheless, these performance measures are of vital importance for continuity of individual companies, chains and networks. This book aims at offering a coherent view on this matter by discussing the possibilities and limitations of quantifying performance, risks and investments in the agri-food chain. A wide variety of approaches from different economic disciplines was used to analyse the complex systems of agri-food supply chains and develop appropriate models for management decision support. Research gaps and discussion points are identified by an international forum of researchers in order to enhance progress in this field. .

Safety In The Agri-Food Chain
Increasing public demand for adequate and safe food supply has led to extensive development in the field of plant-animal production, food processing, quality and safety procedures, food analysis and control and regulations. However, safety of food can only be guaranteed by the integration of control systems in the complete food chain "from stable to table". This book covers the total agri-food chain. The first section includes a chapter giving a clear overview of the food production chain, followed by chapters about distinct safety risk factors (biological, chemical, physical and others) occurring in the agri-food chain. The third section deals with various systems to handle these risk factors. It includes a chapter on the various quality assurance systems, a detailed chapter on HACCP, as well as on risk management, modelling of safety, and tracking and tracing. The last section includes chapters on the different stakeholders (consumer, legislation, ethics) that are concerned with food safety. The book is aimed at supporting educational programmes on safety in agri-food chains in higher education and at the academic level. It can also be used as a handbook in food industry and agri-business..
