Branching Streams Flow in the Darkness: Zen Talks on the Sandokai
When Shunryu Suzuki Roshi's Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind was published in 1972, it was enthusiastically embraced by Westerners eager for spiritual insight and knowledge of Zen. The book became the most successful treatise on Buddhism in English, selling more than one million copies to date. Branching Streams Flow in the Darkness is the first follow-up volume to Suzuki Roshi's important work. Like Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind, it is a collection of lectures that reveal the insight, humor, and intimacy with Zen that made Suzuki Roshi so influential as a teacher. The Sandokai--a poem by the eighth-century Zen master Sekito Kisen (Ch. Shitou Xiqian)--is the subject of these lectures. Given in 1970 at Tassajara Zen Mountain Center, the lectures are an example of a Zen teacher in his prime elucidating a venerated, ancient, and difficult work to his Western students. The poem addresses the question of how the oneness of things and the multiplicity of things coexist (or, as Suzuki Roshi expresses it, "things-as-it-is"). Included with the lectures are his students' questions and his direct answers to them, along with a meditation instruction. Suzuki Roshi's teachings are valuable not only for those with a general interest in Buddhism but also for students of Zen practice wanting an example of how a modern master in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition understands this core text today..

Learning C#
Most C# books are written for experienced C++ and Java programmers If you're a novice programmer, or you have experience in VB6 or other procedural programming languages, and you want to learn C#, until now you've been out of luck. That's why Jesse Liberty, author of the best-selling books Programming C# and Programming ASP.NET, has written an entry-level guide to C#. Written in a warm and friendly manner, this book assumes no prior programming experience, and provides an easy introduction to Microsoft's premier .NET language. Learning C# is a complete introduction to C# and object-oriented programming. Learning C# will help you build a solid foundation in .NET, and show how to apply your skills by using dozens of tested examples. Learning C# introduces Visual Studio .NET, a tool set for building Windows and Web applications. You'll learn about the syntax and structure of the C# language, including operators, classes and interfaces, structs, arrays, and strings. Liberty then demonstrates how to develop various kinds of applications--including those that work with databases--and web services. By the time you've finished Learning C# you'll be ready to move on to a more advanced programming guide that will help you create large-scale web and Windows applications. Whether you have a little object-oriented programming experience or you are new to programming altogether, Learning C# will set you firmly on your way to mastering the essentials of the C# language..

Branching Processes: Variation, Growth, and Extinction of Populations (Cambridge Studies in Adaptive Dynamics)
Biology takes a special place among the other natural sciences because biological units, be they pieces of DNA, cells or organisms, reproduce more or less faithfully As for any other biological processes, reproduction has a large random component. The theory of branching processes was developed especially as a mathematical counterpart to this most fundamental of biological processes. This active and rich research area allows us to make predictions about both extinction risks and the development of population composition, and also uncovers aspects of a population's history from its current genetic composition. Branching processes play an increasingly important role in models of genetics, molecular biology, microbiology, ecology and evolutionary theory. This book presents this body of mathematical ideas for a biological audience, but should also be enjoyable to mathematicians..

Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology Volume 1: The Archaea and the Deeply Branching and Phototrophic Bacteria
This volume includes numerous introductory chapters on the basic concepts and practice of prokaryotic taxonomy in addition to detailed descriptions of the Archaea, phototrophic bacteria and some very deep bacterial phyla. Introductory chapters include the topics of classification of prokaryotes, the concept of bacterial speciation, numerical and polyphasic taxonomy, bacterial nomenclature and the etymology of prokaryotic names, nucleic acid probes and their application in environmental microbiology, culture collections, and the intellectual property of prokaryotes. The first Road Map to the prokaryotes is included as well as an overview of the phylogenetic backbone and taxonomic framework for prokaryotic systematics. This volume also provides descriptions of 413 species in 165 genera that are assigned to the phyla Crenarchaeota, Euryarchaeota, Aquificae, Thermatogae, Thermodesulfobacteria, Deinococcus-Thermus, Chrysiogenetes, Chloroflexi, Thermomicrobia, Nitrospira, Deferribacteres, Cyanobacteria, and Chlorobi. In addition, the volume contains an introductory chapter to nonoxygenic, phototropic species of Bacteria belonging to the Proteobacteria and Firmicutes, which will be repeated in more detail in subsequent volumes. .

Random Sums and Branching Stochastic Processes (Lecture Notes in Statistics)
The aim of this monograph is to show how random sums (that is, the summation of a random number of dependent random variables) may be used to analyse the behaviour of branching stochastic processes. The author shows how these techniques may yield insight and new results when applied to a wide range of branching processes. In particular, processes with reproduction-dependent and non-stationary immigration may be analysed quite simply from this perspective. On the other hand some new characterizations of the branching process without immigration dealing with its genealogical tree can be studied. Readers are assumed to have a firm grounding in probability and stochastic processes, but otherwise this account is self-contained. As a result, researchers and graduate students tackling problems in this area will find this makes a useful contribution to their work..

Branching in Nature
There is increasing evidence that branching processes in nature proceed by similar mechanisms in many seemingly different systems. This is the first comprehensive book dealing with this topic - it encompasses all fields of science, investigating branching morphogenesis and pattern formation in cells, plants, organs and river networks to name but a few. Renowned international researchers have contributed to this volume and taken care that the lectures remain accessible to graduate students and nonspecialist researchers..
