The Joke's Over: Bruised Memories: Gonzo, Hunter S. Thompson, and Me
In the spring of 1970, artist Ralph Steadman went to America in search of work and found more than he bargained for when he met Hunter S. Thompson at the Kentucky Derby. Their remarkable collaboration resulted in the now-legendary Gonzo Journalism, which would document the civil rights movement, the Nixon administration, Watergate, and the many bizarre and great events that shaped the second half of the twentieth century. When Thompson committed suicide in 2005, it was the end of a unique friendship filled with both betrayal and understanding. A rollicking, no-holds-barred memoir, The Joke’s Over is the definitive inside story of the Gonzo years. .

Bruised and Back in the Saddle
“Bruised”-I admit to a penchant for “first time” stories and this is one of them. The idea of a previously straight man who finds himself falling for another man is undeniably interesting. David is the somewhat shy virgin and Marcus if the older, more guarded, object of desire. I have three other stories with these two characters rattling around in my head. “Back in the Saddle” was actually written prior to “Bruised”, oddly enough. I think being closer to Marcus's age gave me a more comfortable feel for his character. It's easy to relate to his sense of caution and guardedness, especially in light of his previous lover's horrific death, only alluded to in the story. That one's on my “To Do” list. It was interesting to try to evoke the calm strength present in many men who handle horses professionally, a trait I find damn sexy.

Rosa, the white daughter of a landowner, and Zuela, the adopted “daughter” of a Chinese shop owner used to play together as girls—and witnessed something terrible behind a hibiscus bush many years ago..
