Against the Tide: How a Compliant Congress Empowered a Reckless President
In this smart, candid, and surprising political memoir, Lincoln Chafee offers a behind-the-scenes look at the first six years of the Bush Administration from the vantage point of one of the few Republican moderates in the Senate. When Senator Chafee (R-RI) went to Washington, he encountered a Republican Party drifting so far to the right it no longer stood for the mainstream principles that united Americans. Instead, under the direction of George W. Bush, the Party had fallen victim to extremism. In the face of this trend, Chafee stood fast as one of the most liberal Republicans in the Senate, seeking to cut across partisan lines at the very time that they threatened to irrevocably divide the nation. A political iconoclast, Chafee was the only Republican senator to have expressed support for same-sex marriage; the only Republican to vote in favor of reinstating the top federal tax rate on upper-income payers; the only Republican in the Senate to have voted against authorization of the use of force in Iraq; the only Republican to vote for the Levin-Reed amendment calling for a nonbinding timetable for a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq; and the only Republican to vote against Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito. Chafee favored increased federal funding for health care, supported affirmative action and gun control, supported women’s reproductive rights, and endorsed federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. Sometimes referred to by conservatives as a RINO (Republican in Name Only), Chafee turns the tables on the right and asks why it has enabled Bush Jr. to pull the GOP and the nation away from traditional principles of fiscal conservatism, respect for our environment, and aversion to foreign entanglements. Unabashedly frank, Chafee’s memoir recounts his political journey from small-town mayor to a voice crying from the congressional wilderness. He offers a forward-looking assessment of what comes next for the Republican and Democratic parties, and he also addresses the potential rise of a third party within the void created by bipartisan extremism. Most important, Chafee sounds a wake-up call to his Party, and to all Americans, by challenging our government to strive, as Abraham Lincoln once articulated, “to elevate the condition of men.” .

Compliant Mechanisms
A concise survey of compliant mechanisms-from fundamentals to state-of-the-art applications This volume presents the newest and most effective methods for the analysis and design of compliant mechanisms. It provides a detailed review of compliant mechanisms and includes a wealth of useful design examples for engineers, students, and researchers. Concise chapters guide the reader from simple to more challenging concepts-using examples of increasing complexity-eventually leading to real-world applications for specific types of devices. The author focuses on compliant mechanisms that can be designed using both standard linear beam equations and more advanced pseudo-rigid-body models. He describes a number of special-purpose compliant mechanisms that have use across a wide range of applications and discusses compliant mechanisms in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) with several accompanying MEMS examples. Coverage of essential topics in strength of materials, machine design, and kinematics is provided to allow for a self-contained book that requires little additional reference to solve compliant mechanism problems. This information can be used as a refresher on the basics or as resource material for readers from other disciplines currently working in MEMS. Compliant Mechanisms serves as both an introductory text for students and an up-to-date resource for practitioners and researchers. It provides comprehensive, expert coverage of this growing field..

Flow Past Highly Compliant Boundaries and in Collapsible Tubes (Fluid Mechanics and Its Applications)
The motivation for this book was provided by The IUTAM Symposium on Flow in Collapsible Tubes and Past Other Highly Compliant Boundaries held on 26-30 March, 2001 at the University of Warwick. As this was the first scientific meeting on this research topic, the Scientific Committee considered it important to mark the occasion by producing a book. They did not wish to produce a conventional proceedings comprising a large number of brief articles of varying quality. Instead the present volume consists of twelve rigorously refereed and edited articles by invited authors who aim to sum up the state of the art in their particular research area. There are articles on flow in collapsible tubes, that include descriptions and discussion of biomedical applications; on instability of external, internal and rotating flows pas compliant walls; on the use of wall compliance for drag reduction and turbulence modification; and on dolphin hydrodynamics..

Nonlinear and Stochastic Dynamics of Compliant Offshore Structures (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications)
The purpose of this monograph is to show how to model a compliant offshore structure in an ocean environment. Such structures are of increasing importance because of the desire to access the deep ocean. A brief history and an extensive review of the four existing transverse beam models are presented. The four beam models are Euler-Bernoulli, Rayleigh, shear and Timoshenko models. These are the fundamental models for the preliminary studies of offshore structures. The complete analytical solutions are given for each model. This review is followed by a chapter on the stochastic modelling of environmental forces. The waves are assumed to be random, and the fluid force is modelled using the Morison Equation. In subsequent chapters, the models are expanded to include the axial motion as well as the transverse motion in two and three dimensions. Numerical results are obtained using both deterministic and random forces. A detailed description of the numerical methods is provided so that the reader can adapt these methods to his or her particular problem. Researchers in the fields of structural mechanics and ocean engineering, especially those with an interest in nonlinear hybrid beam/cable models, will find this a useful book..
