Ship to Shore: A Dictionary of Everyday Words and Phrases Derived from the Sea

“One of the best dictionaries of sea terms ever.”

—Library Journal

Bail out. The coast is clear. In deep water. These are just a few of the seafaring terms that have become part of our common language But where do they come from, and what do they really mean? Peter Jeans provides all the answers in this book which was named a “Best Reference Source” by Library Journal.

In his journey to uncover word origins, Jeans paints a vivid picture of hardy Nantucket whalers and Elizabethan sea dogs, grizzled Nova Scotia fishermen and the crews of great clipper ships. Along the way, he recounts the exploits of such seafaring greats as Sir Francis Drake, Captain Cook, and John Paul Jones.

More than a dictionary, Ship to Shore is a fascinating chronicle of the sailing men who made an enduring contribution to the English language. Here readers will find origins of words and phrases such as:

  • Listless
  • Peepers
  • To turn turtle
  • Sundowner
  • Unstayed
  • To come in with flying colors
  • Blowhard
  • To be taken aback

Categories and Sheaves (Grundlehren der mathematischen Wissenschaften)

Categories and sheaves, which emerged in the middle of the last century as an enrichment for the concepts of sets and functions, appear almost everywhere in mathematics nowadays.

This book covers categories, homological algebra and sheaves in a systematic and exhaustive manner starting from scratch, and continues with full proofs to an exposition of the most recent results in the literature, and sometimes beyond.

The authors present the general theory of categories and functors, emphasising inductive and projective limits, tensor categories, representable functors, ind-objects and localization. Then they study homological algebra including additive, abelian, triangulated categories and also unbounded derived categories using transfinite induction and accessible objects. Finally, sheaf theory as well as twisted sheaves and stacks appear in the framework of Grothendieck topologies.

Methods of Homological Algebra
Homological algebra first arose as a language for describing topological prospects of geometrical objects. As with every successful language it quickly expanded its coverage and semantics, and its contemporary applications are many and diverse. This modern approach to homological algebra, by two leading writers in the field, is based on the systematic use of the language and ideas of derived categories and derived functors. Relations with standard cohomology theory (sheaf cohomology, spectral sequences, etc.) are described. In most cases complete proofs are given. Basic concepts and results of homotopical algebra are also presented. The book addresses people who want to learn a modern approach to homological algebra and to use it in their work. For the second edition the authors have made numerous corrections..

Purchasing and Supply Chain Management Costing: An Air Transport Perspective Derived Through Commercial Air Cargo Firms
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A622524. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Air Force has struggled to completely understand the costs associated with its operations. The issue of understanding cost is complex, involving many perspectives, methods and techniques. When examined from a broad standpoint, total supply chain costs can include a firm's costs plus upstream and downstream costs. This perspective takes vendors, suppliers and end customers into consideration. From this broad standpoint, the Air Force does not know its total supply chain cost. Since the Air Force's supply chain is too broad to be a focus of this study, a smaller segment was chosen for a closer look. Specifically, air cargo carriers were selected as a type of commercial organization that could be sufficiently similar to the Air Force in some respects and possibly offer information to address the investigative questions. The purpose of this research is to determine what costing issues exist in the air cargo arena and what costing methods or techniques are utilized to address those issues. Air cargo carriers were contacted and a telephone interview was administered to strategic key informants. The interviews were exploratory, comprised of open-ended questions about how they calculated their cost information, what problems or issues arose from their chosen method and how they addressed those issues. The results of this study may assist the Air Force in determining methods or techniques to address some its costing issues..
