Descanso: An Urban Oasis Revealed
Descanso Gardens is one of Los Angeles's oldest botanical gardens. Initially a Spanish rancho and later the estate of publisher and horticulturist E. Manchester Boddy, the 160-acre lot was granted to the people of Los Angeles and includes one of the world's finest collections of camellias and oaks. Warren Marr is part of a long tradition of photographers who have responded creatively to the garden and its timeless appeal. His photographic explorations of what he refers to as a "natural light box" have been called "lyrical and luminous" by Getty Museum curator Anne Lyden. Marr's lush panoramic images combined with essays on the significance of the garden plants and history make Descanso an elegant volume for photography and garden lovers..

Joan E. Alessi: Descansos, The Sacred Landscape of New Mexico
Santa Fe photographer Joan Alessi provides a polychromatic exposition of New Mexico's traditional roadside memorials, descansos, as an art form. Her stunning photography captures the artistic attributes of these decorative crosses while preserving their religious and cultural integrity. Sylvia Grider's accompanying essay explains the origin and folkloric tradition of roadside memorials. These religious markers are not in themselves unique to the southwestern United States. Rather, they are a universal phenomenon with a long and curious history. The term descanso (literally translated as "resting place"), however, may have indeed originated among the Spanish-speaking vecinos of New Mexico. "The descansos contained in this book are a reflection of both the emotion and dedication of the devotees as they mourn the passing and celebrate the life of the beloved."--Art Gómez, National Park Service, supervisory historian; (coauthor) New Mexico: Images of a Land and Its People (UNM Press).

The Timer Game (A Grace Descanso Novel)
Grace Descanso was going to be a pediatric heart surgeon---she was a brilliant up-and-comer with a bright future in a heartbreaking, innovative field. Then she took two months off to work in a clinic in Guatemala, and something happened there that nearly destroyed her. She won’t talk about why, but she quit medicine and nearly killed herself with drink. Finally, inch by inch, she pulled it all together for her new baby girl. Now, five years later, though she’s sworn off practicing as a doctor, Grace is using her science background as a crime scene tech in San Diego and going to AA meetings, scraping by and living to be a mom to five-year-old Katie. Everything falls apart again when in the middle of processing a crime scene Grace shoots a madman after he’s killed two of her colleagues and after he’s called her by name, in a bizarre kind of warning, about someone he called “the Spikeman.” A day later, her daughter is kidnapped right out from under her, and instead of a ransom note, the kidnapper sends her on a harrowing twenty-four-hour scavenger hunt, laying out clues and giving out deadlines, leading her carefully, terrifyingly closer to Katie---and to him. The Timer Game is a pulse-pounding race-against-time novel of suspense from a talented writer. .

Descanso
Two years ago, psychotherapist Chris Cameron was devastated by the murder of her partner, Robyn. Even now she struggles daily with the loss as she once again tries to find meaning in her own life. Living in a culture that offers psychotropic drugs, celebrity therapists, "reality" television, junk food, phone sex, credit cards, and banal entertainment as diversions from pain and to avoid the recognition of loss, will Chris be able to rediscover her spirit? Does her resurrection rest within the very symbol of pain--descansos--the makeshift roadside shrines that dot the landscape of the West that symbolize loss and transformation? Will she ever be able to love again? A blend of humor, loss, social commentary, and relationships, Descanso takes you on a moving, tragic, yet exhilarating journey from despair to hope and redemption..
