Disorientation is the first publication in English of the second volume of Technics and Time, in which French philosopher Bernard Stiegler engages in a close dialogue with Husserl, Derrida, and other philosophers who have devoted their energies to technics, such as Heidegger and Simondon.The author's broad intent is to respond to Western philosophy's historical exclusion of technics and techniques from its metaphysical questionings, and in so doing to rescue critical and philosophical thinking. Spatial disorientation has been blamed for 20% of all fatal mishaps in military aviation and has been named as a factor in many high-profile civilian accidents, such as the death of John F. Focusing on the nation’s Islamic-African legacy, Susan Martin-Márquez disputes received wisdom that Spain has consistently rejected its historical relationship to Muslims and Africans. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Weightlessness is the major contributing factor behind the degradation of bone mass, muscle tone, and aerobic capacity during long-term space missions. With the loss of bone mass progressing at up to two percent per month, long duration and interplanetary missions shall remain the sole duty of robotic explorers until sufficient countermeasures are developed. Several countermeasures are either in use, or under development to alleviate this problem. Exercise is currently used to reduce the severity of bone loss and muscle atrophy. Exercise has proven ineffective despite the fact two hours of daily exercise together with elaborate apparatus have been devoted to simulating the load of Earth's gravity. Drug therapy and other, more exotic, countermeasures are also under consideration, but the side-effects of these other treatments and the fact that they do not directly address the root cause of the negative effects of weightlessness means that they may only reduce, not cure, those problems. Only artificial gravity addresses the root cause, weightlessness itself. Flight Simulator Evaluation of a Novel Display to Minimize the Risks of Spatial Disorientation

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A novel instrument display designed to reduce cognitive workload and improve accuracy of flight and recovery from a disorienting episode was tested against flight with standard instruments in a UH-60 dynamic helicopter simulator. Sixteen non-UH-60 rated pilots flew a standard instrument profile and recovered from a series of unusual attitudes both with and without a secondary task. Results from all aspects of the assessment proved the benefits of the new display. Not only was there evidence of enhanced flight control, but also an improved performance on a secondary task (auditory tone identification), and reduced control input errors. Evidence from analysis of the secondary task scores showed that cognitive workload was reduced when using the novel display compared to the standard instruments. The display should be further developed to make it possible to utilize it in a head-up display or other night vision device.
