Foundations of Manual Lymph Drainage
This manual lymph drainage guide covers the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the lymphatic system, providing key background information necessary for effective treatment. Chapters are structured according to anatomic regions, focusing on the lymphatic knots and their tributary regions in the throat, armpit, trunk, and groin. Photographs illustrate the lymphatic knots and lymphatic courses, which are drawn on the human body, and provide a clear picture of the structures to be treated. Designated points are numbered to illustrate the progression of treatment in each region. Also includes coverage of complete decongestive therapy (CDT).

  • Explains procedures in a detailed, step-by-step format.
  • Features a helpful chart of lymph node groups and their tributary regions that outlines each lymph node as it pertains to a specific anatomical region.
  • Key information is summarized in the margins, making it easier for readers to review what they've read and focus on important topics.
  • Self-test questions provide an excellent means for readers to assess their comprehension and review key material in the book. These questions are also helpful in preparing for exams.
  • Two-color illustrations help the reader visualize and learn theoretical aspects of this therapy.

  • The text has been completely updated to reflect the latest techniques in lymph drainage therapy.
  • Coverage of individual treatment strokes and stroke sequences have been updated, with more comprehensive descriptions and detailed photos that illustrate proper hand placement, pressure, and movement.
  • Expanded coverage of complete decongestive therapy, including a CDT survey - consisting of the case history, examination, and palpation - that can be used to gather valuable information to formulate therapeutic goals and evaluate treatment results.

A Guide for Delineation of Lymph Nodal Clinical Target Volume in Radiation Therapy

Conformal radiotherapy offers the opportunity to enhance precise delivery of high dose radiation to the target volume while maintaining normal tissues doses at acceptable tolerance levels. This technique requires an exact definition of the treatment volumes: gross tumour volume (GTV), clinical target volume (CTV) and planning target volume (PTV). For this reason, it is important to have a very good knowledge of radiological anatomy and natural history of the disease.

In particular, CTV is a tissue volume that contains the macroscopic disease with the surrounding areas suspected of subclinical involvement (CTV) and regional lymph nodes (CTV2). Delivery of adequate doses of irradiation to lymph nodes at risk, enhances treatment outcome and selective irradiation of them decreases morbitidy and yields better quality of life.

To facilitate the understanding of cross-sectional anatomy detail and to assist Radiation Oncologists on the difficult task of a detailed delineation of lymph node targets in multiple anatomical locations, the editors compiled this work.

The book opens with a brief overview of the anatomy of the lymphatic system, followed by the main anatomical classifications involving lymph drain in four main regions (head and neck, mediastinum, superior abdomen, pelvis) and describes the spreading patterns of the different cancers. Based on close collaboration between Radiologists and Radiation Oncologists, explicit instructions for lymph nodal clinical target volumes delineation are proposed to obtain a more accurate and consistent definition of these volumes of interest; axial topographic reference points for anatomical boundaries of regional lymph nodes are presented in illustrative tables.  A folding page, containing of one side the anatomical-radiological tables and on the other the CT axial images, will facilitate the reading of CT images reported in the book from the head and neck region to the pelvic one.

The ediors hope that this book will be a valuable aid in accurate image based radiation therapy treatment planning for young as well as for more experienced Radiation Oncologists.

The Swamp: The Everglades, Florida, and the Politics of Paradise
The Everglades was once reviled as a liquid wasteland, and Americans dreamed of draining it. Now it is revered as a national treasure, and Americans have launched the largest environmental project in history to try to save it. The Swamp is the stunning story of the destruction and possible resurrection of the Everglades, the saga of man's abuse of nature in southern Florida and his unprecedented efforts to make amends. Michael Grunwald, a prize-winning national reporter for The Washington Post, takes readers on a riveting journey from the Ice Ages to the present, illuminating the natural, social and political history of one of America's most beguiling but least understood patches of land.

The Everglades was America's last frontier, a wild country long after the West was won. Grunwald chronicles how a series of visionaries tried to drain and "reclaim" it, and how Mother Nature refused to bend to their will; in the most harrowing tale, a 1928 hurricane drowned 2,500 people in the Everglades. But the Army Corps of Engineers finally tamed the beast with levees and canals, converting half the Everglades into sprawling suburbs and sugar plantations. And though the southern Everglades was preserved as a national park, it soon deteriorated into an ecological mess. The River of Grass stopped flowing, and 90 percent of its wading birds vanished.

Now America wants its swamp back. Grunwald shows how a new breed of visionaries transformed Everglades politics, producing the $8 billion rescue plan. That plan is already the blueprint for a new worldwide era of ecosystem restoration. And this book is a cautionary tale for that era. Through gripping narrative and dogged reporting, Grunwald shows how the Everglades is still threatened by the same hubris, greed and well-intentioned folly that led to its decline.

Michael Grunwald is a reporter at The Washington Post. He has won the George Polk Award for national reporting, the Worth Bingham Prize for investigative reporting, and many other awards. He lives in Miami with his wife, Cristina Dominguez.

Wetland Drainage, Restoration, and Repair
Wetlands are a vital part of the landscape and ecology of the United States, providing critical habitat for fish and wildlife; yet they are being destroyed at an alarming rate. A detailed and comprehensive analysis of wetlands management, "Wetland Drainage, Restoration, and Repair" can help reverse this trend. The book begins with a historical overview of wetland destruction and repair over the past two hundred years and shows clearly how the effects on drained locations remain evident generations later. It also serves as a unique guide to aid anyone, from novice to engineer, engaged in the process of wetland restoration. Author Thomas R. Biebighauser draws from his own vast experience in building and repairing more than 900 wetlands across North America. Included are numerous photographs and case studies that highlight successes and failures of past projects. Detailed, step-by-step instructions guide the reader through each restoration project. Woven throughout are stories of people across the continent - in schools, on farms, and in national forests - who are restoring wet meadows, bogs, emergent wetlands, ephemeral wetlands, and forested wetlands, often using the same tools that destroyed them. Biebighauser also provides a number of effective strategies for initiating and improving funding for wetlands programs. "Wetland Drainage, Restoration, and Repair" is essential reading for all who care about these important ecosystems..
