Calendar Of Letters From The Mayor And Corporation Of The City Of London, Circa A.D. 1350-1370, Enrolled And Preserved Among The Archives Of The Guildhall
CALENDAR OF LETTERS FROM THE MAYOR AND CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF LONDON, CIRCA A. D. 1350--1370, ENROLLED AND PRESERVED AMONG THE ARCHIVES OF THE CORPORATION AT THE GUILDHALL. INTRODUCTION. THE letters which arc llcrc shortly set out are inscribed on two rolls preserved, among other records of the Corporation of the City of London, in the Town Clerks Ofice at the Guildhall. They are enrolled, as wiIl be seen, undcr the names of the various Mayors during whosc term of office they were dispatched, and comprise a very brief period only, viz., A. D. 1350-1370, and this not i t h o a t considerable hiatus, viz., A. D. 1360-1363 L FCO. The rolIs themselves contain twenty - nine and tcn membranes rcspectivcly, which, however, are not stitched togcthcr in strict chronological order. Attciition had been drawn to the earlier of the rolls at least so far back as the year 1869, but the existence of the later and smaller roll was not discovered till some years afterwards. Both of them were in a dilapidated state till very recently, when they were placcd, by direction of the Guildhall Library Committee, in the custody of Alfred Kingston, Esq., of the Public Record Office, who kitldly undertook to see them carefully repaired. Ko other roll of a similar character has since come to light, aIthough it would, perhaps, bc too much to say that there might not be others lying still unobserved somc vhcre among the numerous and yet uncalendarcd rolls in the possession of tlie City of London. Be that as it may, it was not thought desirable to delay any longer thc printing an abstract of such letters as were contained in the two rolIs already discovered, and thus to render their contcnts morc accessible to the literary public and accordingly the Library Corn mittee made a recommendation to that effect to the Court of Common Council in July, 1883, and obtained permission to carry the samc into cxecution. vi INTRODUCTION. It is not ncccssary here to enter at ally length upon the different subjects embraced by thcse letters. Thc-I. c trexs, for t w - selves. and serve to show. in rcatcr rclief. perhaps, than most extant records of thc same period, status , of thc City of London towards thc lattcr half of the fourtccntb c e n t u r d s - C-various munici n n l k at hnmr Notwithstanding the fact that Icing Edrvard 111. had in the t enty scvcnyteha r of his rcign rernovcd thc staple of wool from the Flemish town of Brugcs to thc English towns of Westminster, Canterbury, Chichester, Lxeter, Winchester, Bristol, Lincoln, York, Norwich, hewcastlc, and Hull for England to Dublin, Cork, Waterford, and Drogheda for Ireland and to Carmarthen for Wales still WC find among these letters a larger proportion addressed to the municipal authorities of TSruges than of any othcr town either at home or abroad a significant proof of the dificulty that always besets an atte npt to turn thc tidc of commerce into other channcls by arbitrary means. As a matter of history we know that it was found ncccssary to repeal a part of this Act in 1363, and that Calais still remained a staple till finally suppcssed i-n 1369. An Act of Parliament passed in that year confined the staple of wool for the future to the folloxving English, ports, viz....
