From the supplier: Users who need to store multimedia presentations can choose from among several mass storage options. A portable hard disk is an ideal solution if the user's own equipment is being used. For educational institutions, removable media systems such as a removable Winchester drive, usually available in 44Mbyte or 88Mbyte storage ranges, is a better choice. Some vendors offer such devices with dual drives that boost the storage capacity into the one gigabyte range. Optical storage is available in either the familiar rewritable optical disk drive, which uses magneto-optical technology, or phase change, a newer technology that writes data with a single revolution of the disc. Other promising storage technologies include very high density (VHD) floppy drives, which employ barium ferrite disk media, and CD-R and O-ROM. A list of vendors and products is included.

From the supplier: Tandy Corp's THOR-CD allows users to write, erase and rewrite CD-compatible optical disks. THOR, or Tandy High-intensity Optical Recording, is perfect for educational institutions, which need flexible, highly-accessible storage systems. THOR-CD media uses thermal and optical technologies to create pits in a heat-sensitive dye polymer material. The pits are very similar to those found in standard audio CDs or CD-ROM discs, but in the new technology the pits, while environmentally stable, can be removed by thermo-optically reversing the process. The erase process can be bulk, erasing the entire disc, or spot, selectively erasing only parts of a disc. Tandy officials say the most significant element of the new technology is its complete compatibility with current audio CD and CD-ROM players, which means THOR discs can be played in equipment currently in use.
