The Evidential Argument from Evil (Indiana Series in the Philosophy of Religion)
Is evil evidence against the existence of God? Even if God and evil are compatible, it remains hotly contested whether evil renders belief in God unreasonable "The Evidential Argument from Evil" presents five classic statements on this issue by eminent philosophers and theologians and places them in dialog with eleven original essays reflecting new thinking by these and other scholars. The volume focuses on two versions of the argument. The first affirms that there is no reason for God to permit either certain specific horrors or the variety and profusion of undeserved suffering. The second asserts that pleasure and pain, given their biological role, are better explained by hypotheses other than theism. Contributors include William P. Alston, Paul Draper, Richard M. Gale, Daniel Howard-Snyder, Alvin Plantinga, William L. Rowe, Bruce Russell, Eleonore Stump, Richard G. Swinburne, Peter van Inwagen, and Stephen John Wykstra..

The Evidential Foundations of Probabilistic Reasoning
No matter how irrefutable it may seem, evidence is often a matter of interpretation Incomplete, inconclusive, imprecise, or vague, it is nonetheless the basis of myriad everyday conclusions and decisions In this authoritative work, David A. Schum develops a general theory of evidence as it is understood and applied across a broad range of disciplines and practical undertakings. Synthesizing insights from law, philosophy, logic, probability, semiotics, artificial intelligence, psychology, and history, Schum provides a detailed examination of the various properties and uses of evidence and the evaluative skills evidence requires. Along with the evidential subtleties beneath the surface of probabilistic reasoning, Schum explores the various processes by which evidence is generated or discovered and looks at the intellectual and practical underpinnings of probabilistic reasoning. In addition, The Evidential Foundations of Probabilistic Reasoning evaluates appropriate methods for defending the relevance and credibility of evidence and the means by which the inferential weight of evidence is assessed. Over one hundred numerical examples illustrate the workings of diverse probabilistic expressions for the inferential force of evidence and the subtleties they reveal. In presenting structural issues, mathematical matters, and the processes of imaginative reasoning, this wide-ranging study makes a convincing, coherent case for a science of evidence. It is a useful resource for students, researchers, and practitioners of every discipline concerned with evidence and its inferential use..

Analysing Witness Testimony: Psychological, Investigative and Evidential Perspectives: A Guide for Legal Practitioners and Other Professionals
The consideration of witness testimony had traditionally been a task left to fact-finders with scant guidance from legal professionals As a result, various practices have developed during the investigative and trial process which can obscure or even eradicate critical material. Miscarriages of justice will continue to occur, so long as those working within the justice system continue to accept witnesses and their testimony at face value. This book aims to make practitioners, as well as the fact-finders and those who guide them, aware of a wide range of perspectives on witness testimony. Each contributor identifies bad practice and puts forward ideas for improvement or removal of previously acceptable investigative and forensic methods..

The Structure of Evidential Categories in Wanka Quechua (SIL International and the University of Texas at Arlington Publications in Linguistics, vol.131)
The study of evidentiality is in its relative infancy, and each new study in this largely unexplored area of linguistic structure reveals subtleties of grammatical and semantic behavior that give reason to reconsider and deepen analyses found in previous works. Evidentiality is usually discussed in terms of the kinds of justification a speaker has for making a particular assertion. When the author first began studying the Wanka Quechua language, he was immediately struck with the fact that the evidential system was not behaving as he had expected. Careful consideration of the individual markers revealed semantic nuances that are not usually found in other treatments on this topic. This volume provides a detailed look at the semantics of the evidential system of one Quechua language with implications for others. Parallels are noted with evidential systems of unrelated languages. The author analyzes the Wanka Quechua evidential system using a cognitive view of grammar and applies this approach to issues of semantics and category structure. Dr. Rick Floyd has studied the Wanka dialect of Quechua in the central Peruvian Andes since 1981. He earned his Ph.D. in linguistics at the University of California in San Diego in 1993 and is a member of the International Cognitive Linguistics Association and the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas. He has taught phonetics and other courses at several SIL schools and is a linguistic consultant of SIL Peru. He is also the coauthor of Articulatory Phonetics: Tools for Analyzing the World's Languages (ISBN:9781556711657) and numerous articles. Table of ContentsAbbreviations - Introduction
