The Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence
How much do we humans enjoy our current status as the most intelligent beings on earth? Enough to try to stop our own inventions from surpassing us in smarts? If so, we'd better pull the plug right now, because if Ray Kurzweil is right we've only got until about 2020 before computers outpace the human brain in computational power. Kurzweil, artificial intelligence expert and author of The Age of Intelligent Machines, shows that technological evolution moves at an exponential pace. Further, he asserts, in a sort of swirling postulate, time speeds up as order increases, and vice versa. He calls this the "Law of Time and Chaos," and it means that although entropy is slowing the stream of time down for the universe overall, and thus vastly increasing the amount of time between major events, in the eddy of technological evolution the exact opposite is happening, and events will soon be coming faster and more furiously. This means that we'd better figure out how to deal with conscious machines as soon as possible--they'll soon not only be able to beat us at chess, but also likely demand civil rights, and might at last realize the very human dream of immortality. The Age of Spiritual Machines is compelling and accessible, and not necessarily best read from front to back--it's less heavily historical if you jump around (Kurzweil encourages this). Much of the content of the book lays the groundwork to justify Kurzweil's timeline, providing an engaging primer on the philosophical and technological ideas behind the study of consciousness. Instead of being a gee-whiz futurist manifesto, Spiritual Machines reads like a history of the future, without too much science fiction dystopianism. Instead, Kurzweil shows us the logical outgrowths of current trends, with all their attendant possibilities. This is the book we'll turn to when our computers first say "hello." --Therese Littleton.

Do Not Exceed the Stated Dose
Be cautious; reading too many of Peter Lovesey's stories at once could have unexpected results. "Passion Killers" will make your toes curl for the hapless Mrs Palmer, and "The Odstock Curse" may well induce goosebumps as a Gypsy curse is repeated in the present. Among the fifteen tales are two featuring Peter Lovesey's forthright police detective, Peter Diamond, and two with the amateur sleuth, Bertie, Prince of Wales, in rumbustious form. The collection also include "The Pushover," winner of the Mystery Writers of America's Golden Mysteries short story prize, and "Quiet PleaseWe're Rolling," both nominated for Britain's Crime Writer's Association Short Story Dagger. Do Not Exceed the Stated Dose includes a complete checklist of Peter Lovesey's crime writing..

Down Syndrome, One Family's Journey: Beth Exceeds Expectations
This book follows Beth, a woman born with Down Syndrome, to adulthood In an earlier book, Bethy and the Mouse, the Reverend Bakely followed Beth and her brother Matthew, born with a microcephalic brain, through their preschool years. Beth entered a mainstreamed preschool and continued in mainstreamed classes until her graduation at 12th grade. During these years, she placed in the fiftieth to seventy-fifth percentile. She participated in the chorus and the orchestra in high school, spent much time with her peers in school and in her community. She has since gone on to take college courses and has graduated with a certificate in recreational therapy. Beth's achievements are exceptional for persons born with Down Syndrome. Some of the contributing factors include an excellent early education program, mainstreamed schooling and community living, and a receptive and encouraging family. She and her siblings discuss their life together, and her future. Her father includes extensive discussion about his role in Beth's development. He includes accounts about his meetings with professionals both skeptical and encouraging. In this wry and positive book, Beth shows more everyday achievements than was predicted for her, and Reverend Bakely relates his insights into rearing children with disabilities so they can mature competently as adults..
