Mosaics: Inspiration and Original Projects for Interiors and Exteriors
Superb colorist Kaffe Fassett departs from his usual medium of textiles to unleash his magic on the world of mosaics Teamed with expert needle artist-turned-mosaicist Candace Bahouth, Fassett proves no less adept at manipulating the harder materials--glass and ceramic tesserae, broken china and tiles, mirror fragments, pebbles, seashells, and even faux pearls--than his accustomed softer substances of fabric and yarn. As with most of Fassett's oeuvre, this volume is more an assemblage of highly imaginative ideas than a traditional how-to approach. A number of the projects do include step-by-step instructions and there is good coverage of the basics (tools, materials, bases, tesserae preparation, adhesives, grouting), but the presentation presumes the readers' willingness to experiment, as well as some degree of confidence in their own creativity. But again, as is typical of Fassett's productions, the simple act of leafing through these pages offers unlimited inspiration. Stunning photographs abound with brilliant hues and spectacular creations by the authors and by mosaic artists around the world: grottoes, chapels, cars, walls, furniture, terraces, entire buildings. And perhaps mosaic work is not so different from textile manipulation after all: witness the many pieces composed like a patchwork quilt, or the tapestry-upholstered armchair that reveals itself actually to be entirely covered not in fabric but in ceramic tesserae. This volume is truly a feast for the eyes. --Amy Handy.

Calculus: Concepts and Applications
The acclaimed Calculus: Concepts and Applications is now available in a new edition, revised to reflect important changes in the Advanced Placement curriculum, and updated to incorporate feedback from instructors throughout the U.S. With over 40 years of experience teaching AP Calculus, Paul Foerster developed Calculus: Concepts and Applications with the high school student in mind, but with all the content of a college-level course. Like the previous edition, the second edition follows the AP Calculus curriculum for both AB and BC levels. In Calculus: Concepts and Applications, students start off with calculus! Review of precalculus occurs at various points when it’s needed. The text combines graphing-calculator technology with a unique, real-world application approach, and presents calculus as a study of just four fundamental concepts: limits, derivatives, definite integrals, and indefinite integrals. Students learn these concepts using algebraic, numerical, graphical, and verbal approaches. As a result, students with a wider range of abilities can be successful in calculus, not just those who are strong in algebra. The accompanying set of Explorations in the Instructor’s Resource Book, designed for cooperative group work, gives students hands-on experience with new topics before they are formally introduced. In this new edition, derivatives of transcendental functions, related rates, as well as area and volume applications of the definite integral are introduced earlier. Additionally, the Instructor’s Resource Book includes projects utilizing the CBL™, The Geometer’s Sketchpad ®, and Fathom Dynamic Statistics™ software, giving students extended opportunities to explore and understand calculus in depth. .

Bungalow Details: Exterior
What defines an Arts and Crafts bungalow? What makes it different from other small, one or one-and-a-half story houses? In Bungalow Details: Exterior, you'll learn of the elements that make up the whole experience: sleeping porches, knee braces, river rock columns, pillars, three-part front windows, low-pitched roofs, shingle siding, art glass light fixtures, clinker brick chimneys, pergolas, exposed rafter tails, and an extensive use of wood, stone, and brick. None of these features by themselves characterize a bungalow, but it is often the way these details and others are combined-and the philosophy they represent-that makes a house a true, authentic Arts and Crafts bungalow. Bamboo Style: Exteriors, Interiors, Details (Icons)

The dried stems are extremely sturdy and lend themselves to a multitude of uses. Shigeru Ban, for example, found a way to create lumber from laminated woven bamboo for a house he designed in Beijing. Other houses show off bamboo in more straightforward ways, lining the ceilings or floors with stems, or even forming walls. Bamboo is also used to construct furniture, lending a chair or a bed a warm, earthy feeling. This unique look book captures the many uses of bamboo in houses throughout China, Japan, and Indonesia..
