Philosophical Lectures on Probability: collected, edited, and annotated by Alberto Mura (Synthese Library) (Synthese Library)
Lectures on Probability contains the transcription of a series of lectures held by Bruno de Finetti (one of the fathers of subjective Bayesianism) and collected by the editor Alberto Mura at the Institute for Advanced Mathematics in Rome in 1979. The book offers a live in-context outlook on de Finetti s later philosophy of probability. On several points de Finetti s remarks revise widespread interpretations of his thought and reveal to be topical in the light of recent developments. The book is enriched by an essay of Maria Carla Galavotti, introducing de Finetti s philosophy of probability as well as biographical essential information. Moreover, it contains more than 180 editor s notes, aimed at helping the reader to properly appreciate de Finetti s thought and its impact on recent philosophical developments about probability. Philosophical Lectures on Probability is addressed to a wide-ranging audience, including epistemologists, philosophers of science, social scientists, statisticians, economists, historians of mathematics and statistics and, in general, to everyone is interested in subjective Bayesianism and related philosophical problems. The technical prerequisites of the book do not exceed high school mathematics. This does not, however, prevent an elevated standard from the conceptual viewpoint..

Algebra IV: Infinite Groups. Linear Groups (Encyclopaedia of Mathematical Sciences)
Group theory is one of the most fundamental branches of mathematics This volume of the Encyclopaedia is devoted to two important subjects within group theory. The first part of the book is concerned with infinite groups. The authors deal with combinatorial group theory, free constructions through group actions on trees, algorithmic problems, periodic groups and the Burnside problem, and the structure theory for Abelian, soluble and nilpotent groups. They have included the very latest developments; however, the material is accessible to readers familiar with the basic concepts of algebra. The second part treats the theory of linear groups. It is a genuinely encyclopaedic survey written for non-specialists. The topics covered includethe classical groups, algebraic groups, topological methods, conjugacy theorems, and finite linear groups. This book will be very useful to allmathematicians, physicists and other scientists including graduate students who use group theory in their work..

Finitely generated commutative monoids
There is a large amount of bibliography related to Semigroup Theory. Apart from Redei's book, almost all the existing publications in this field are devoted to the study of semigroups not necessarily commutative. Some of them have several chapters involving commutative semigroups, but the theory developed there is too general and few of them focus their attention on finitely generated commutative semigroups. Thus when one tries to study this kind of semigroups one has to "swallow'' many concepts that are not suitable and that, in many cases, turn out to be trivial for finitely generated commutative monoids. In addition, there is a lack of effective methods for studying properties of finitely generated commutative monoids. These were in fact the chief reasons for developing a self-contained book on finitely generated commutative monoids with the theory and algorithms needed for the study of the main classical problems related to this kind of monoid.

This book is not only addressed to people working in Semigroup Theory. The only knowledge required to follow and understand its contents is basic Linear Algebra. Thus any student of second year of Mathematics or Computer Science might find the book easy to understand. This monograph can also be used as a textbook of a course on finitely generated monoids.

This material is not only interesting from the semigroup point of view, it has many applications to other fields in algebra, as the theory stems from problems in these fields of research..
