Rescue at Engine 32
This is a true story of one woman's journey to attend to the well-being of firemen devastated by the loss of four members of their Company and 339 of their brethren on September 11, 2001. It is about the ultimate rescue, for in a startling reversal of roles the firefighters help to heal the author's own traumatic past.In a tone both poignant and thoughtful, Ms. Locke provides an authentic, historical account of life in a New York City firehouse. Her acceptance past the "big red doors" and a line of battle-hardened firefighters is a heartwarming tribute to how giving to others can become the ultimate experience of receiving. (A portion of the proceeds will be used to assist firefighters affected by 9/11 and the Jessica Locke Firefighters Fund.).

Thank God For These Guys: Chicago's Firemen on the Job
This book is about firemen doing their work. It is not a book exclusively for firemen, men and women, at least not directly It is a book about them, their work and how they do it, their tradition and dedication It is for all of us who didn't know what they do. It is for all the fascinated people to whom the author has shown these photos who never realized how compelling the work really is. We can honor the memories of those fallen in the line of duty with ceremonies and dedications, not only at the World Trade Center, but all over the country, on average 116 a year. But it isn't enough to just feel badly for them. What they would like but hold out little hope for is to be understood and not taken for granted; the very thing all of us need. In that spirit Alan Jacobs set out to find out as much as he could, never realizing at the time the complexity of the job, how captivating it would become, the tight-knit community he was allowed to enter, the tragedy, and the humor, the honesty and openness, the help he would receive and the friendships. What a bunch they are..

Hand Book Of Calculations For Engineers And Firemen - Relating To The Steam Engine, The Steam Boiler, Pumps, Shafting, Etc
HAND BOOK OF CALCULATIONS FOB ENGINEERS AND FIREMEN RELATING TO CHE STEAM ENGINE, THE STEAM BOILER, PUMPS, SHAFTING, ET C - 1890.1901. - INTRODUCTION - I would give a thousand dollars if I knew the principles apon which my engine works. This was the remark of a western engineer made to a gentleman who was admiring tbe performance of the steam plant under the charge of the former. C I can attend to every necessary thing about my whole apparatus engine, boilers, pumps, pipes, and do all that is expected of an engineer, but I dont know why the steam does its work, and I mould give a thousand dollars to Enow. This work is prepared for those who, like the engineer whose words are quoted, wish to Enow, and are milling to pay the cost, in money and study. Abraham Lincoln once said, in the early days of his opening manhood, with the warm enthusiasm characteristic of his noble mind, That man who furnishes me with a good book is my best friend at the age of 18 he was the proud owner of six rolumes. The desire has been strong indeed, in the mind of the ahthor, while compiling this work, upon a single page of which, at times, several days have been spent, that it might come to many aspiring men, with the same potent good, as the few books which Abraham Lincoln had access to in his early stmg gling days. In the wide expanse of mathematics it has been a task of the utmost difficulty for the author to lay out a road that would not too soon weary or discourage the student if he had his wish he would gladly advance step by step with his pupil, and much better explain, by word and gesture and emphasis, the great principles which underlie the operations of mechanics to do this would be impossible, so he writes his admonition in two short words In case of obstacles, Cc GO ON. If some rule or process seems too hard to learn, go around the difficulty, always advancing, and, in time, return and conquer. One thing of importance may here be said. The value of a teacher or instructor cannot be overestimated. Men were not made to do their work alone they are created so that they need arisistance and encouragement in every direction except downwards to be helped and to help is the universal law. In no profession more than steam engineering does this law hold truer, and while the editor has written down the hard problems he has all the time, while making them as plain as possible to do so, had the secret wish that the learner might have at his side, when the book came to him, a kind and generous tutor, who could, and cheerfully would, go with him over the untravelled road. There is a single unique Book in the world, two thousand years compiling, of which it is said that no person can be called foolish who diligently peruses its pages so the authors topmost wish has been now to prepare a book so elenzentary and yet so wide in its scope that no engineer or fireman could justly bb called ignorant who had carefully studied and become familiar with its pages....
