Pattern Hatching: Design Patterns Applied (Software Patterns Series)
Author John Vlissides is a member of the so-called Gang of Four: writers of the bestselling and influential Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software, a catalog of 23 design patterns. This more recent book delivers considerable insight on using and applying software design patterns--reusable designs for common programming problems--and compiles the author's further experience with patterns. Pattern Hatching first defends the patterns movement by offering 10 myths about patterns, which provide a framework for thinking about the role of patterns in today's software. (While not a silver bullet, the author argues for the continued importance of patterns throughout software engineering.) The next section shows how to apply several patterns (drawn from the original 23) in a file system; the author uses and describes common patterns such as the Composite, Visitor, Proxy, and Singleton. To help illustrate how to use patterns and how they work together, the author also provides C++ source code for the designs in the book. Part of the fun of reading Pattern Hatching is getting the author's insight on the origin of thinking about patterns, including several patterns that were actually left out of the original book, such as the Generation Gap pattern and the Multicast pattern. For readers who are familiar with Design Patterns, Pattern Hatching is a lively behind-the-scenes look at one of the most important recent developments in software design. --Richard Dragan.

Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching
From age-old scourges such as smallpox and tuberculosis to emerging threats like AIDS and SARS, our interactions with animals have always played a pivotal role as a source of human disease. Bird flu is the latest such menace coming home to roost. Leading public health authorities now predict as inevitable a pandemic of influenza, triggered by bird flu and expected to lead to millions of deaths around the globe. The influenza virus has existed for millions of years as an innocuous intestinal virus of wild ducks. What turned a harmless waterborne duck virus into a killer? In Bird Flu, Dr. Michael Greger traces the human role in the evolution of this virus, whose humble beginnings belie its transformation into a killer mutant strain with the potential to become as ferocious as Ebola and as contagious as the common cold. In the face of the coming pandemic, Dr. Greger reveals what we can do to protect our families and what human society to can do to reduce the likelihood of such catastrophes in the future. Amid the growing panic surrounding this issue, Dr. Greger takes a sobering look at a deadly cycle and offers a solution to ending it..

Hatching Magic
In this friendly little fantasy, three different seekers pursue a lost dragon. And this isn't just any dragon--her name is Wycca, and she's a wyvern, the most catlike of the species Wycca belongs to Gideon, a busy twelfth-century wizard. When he finds that she has wandered through a bolt-hole into the future, he sighs, packs up his magic implements and his familiars--Ignus the flame and the two-headed snake he calls Ouroboros--and steps into the mysterious opening to emerge in twenty-first century Boston. There he meets Iain Merlin O'Shea, the Wizard of Harvard Square, who takes him home and explains the magic of technology while they search for the lost wyvern. Other seekers are also abroad: Kobold, Gideon's half-brother and arch enemy, wants to capture Wycca to turn her against her master; he has brought along an assistant demon, Febrys, who in her uncomfortable disguise as a human woman finds that cloven hooves are not compatible with high heels. Caught between these two magical forces is twelve-year-old Theodora, or Dodo, who yearns for the black wyvern card to complete her set and gain her admittance to the Wyvernkeeper's Circle that meets in the local bookstore. To complicate matters, Wycca is with egg, and when she has nested and hatched her chick, there are two wyverns on the loose in Boston in this fast-moving tale that will entertain younger fantasy readers. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell.

The Baby Uggs Are Hatching
We've fallen in love with this book. We couldn't help it! The inimitable children's poet Jack Prelutsky and illustrator James Stevenson have won our hearts with such extravagant creatures as the Quossible ("its habits are impossible,/its temper is irascible,/its manners are not passable") and the Sneezysnoozer who sneezes "in a dozen sneezy sizes,/it sneezes little breezes/and it sneezes big surprises/and it sneezes teeny wheezes,/so it easily amuses,/when the Sneezysnoozer sneezes/as the Sneezysnoozer chooses." We can't resist the Sneepies who lie in a heap or the Smasheroo who "broke a batch of bottles/into bits as big as beans,/and shattered stacks of saucers/into scads of smithereens." Stevenson, who teamed up with Prelutsky for the magnificent The New Kid on the Block and other books, delightfully depicts these deliciously absurd creatures in comical, lively pen-and-ink drawings. A starred review in School Library Journal calls this book "exuberant," and Horn Book calls it "splendid." We call it a book that no child should have to live without. (All ages).
