Phaco Without the Phaco: Ecce And Manual Small Incision Techniques for Cataract Surgery
Phaco emulsification is the most common technique used in cataract removal surgery It requires dispersal of the content of the cataract by breaking it down using ultrasound and then sucking out the matter, leaving the clear lens capsule in place. “Phaco Without The Phaco” describes the latest cataract removal techniques which extract the whole lens, and the techniques for subsequent replacement lens insertion. It explores a number of techniques all aimed at the same objective – to safely remove the whole contents of the lens through the smallest possible incision – without requiring any machine other than the surgeon’s brain, hands and simple instruments. This volume contains contributions from the biggest names worldwide in eye surgery, and to quote Dr David McIntyre “This is the book that has begged to be produced! More than any other, this volume should be required reading for ophthalmic surgeons.”

The Blue Line Incision and Refractive Phacoemulsification
The Blue Line Incision and Refractive Phacoemulsification is based on the newest developments in cataract surgery, highlighting the blue line incision technique, which combines the safety of the scleral tunnel incision with the efficiency of a clear corneal incision. It is a natural transition for both clear corneal and scleral tunnel incision surgeons. The book also includes Kurt Buzard's unique "swipe and swallow" technique, which allows quick and easy removal of the lens with a significantly lower possibility of error.
The book focuses on the increasing trend and ability of surgeons to obtain refractive results with lens-related surgeries. It also includes a special technique of performing astigmatism corrections at the slit-lamp and a procedure for intraocular lens exchange through the same incision without sutures. This resource is essential for all surgeons performing cataract surgery.

Incision: Incision
Visual artist and poet Alice Attie produced an outstanding series of photographs on the meeting place of art and medicine Documenting some of the most precarious surgical procedures of modern medicine, Attie applied her extraordinary sense of photography to produce unbelievably tender images of men, women and children in otherwise terrifying states of vulnerability. During craniotomies, organ transplantation, tumor removal, surgical procedures to correct congenital deformities, Attie was present at dozens of procedures over three years resulting in pictures that show what we never see, or want to see: the body in its most fragile state. With light reminiscent of Caravaggio illuminating the deeply intimate views of her subjects, Attie’s awe and respect for both the surgeons and their patients is unmistakably clear in her tough and intense photographs.

The images in this book are situated on that precarious line that is invisibly drawn between the bidden and the forbidden, between what we desire and what we shun, between beauty and terror. They are part of a complex world that is so intimately ours that we rarely have ample distance from it to draw close, and, in so doing, to reveal to ourselves something more of our own mysterious nature. ... It is my hope that these images will push beyond the limits of what we are accustomed to calling medicine or art, that they be understood, not as spectacles, but as sites of inquiry and wonder. If they stir, perhaps they will do so by helping us to contemplate the many emotional, philosophical, and spiritual responses inspired by what is simultaneously painful to look at and extremely compelling. –Alice Attie.
